Guest guest
Although a message about the unfortunate overuse of Losec was posted to the group here it has not yet apppeared on the list - but i would like to add the following anyway: Yes as a nurse I am appalled by the number of patients who are put on Losec (Omeprazole). I would say - if a patient is under the care of a GP and over 60 years old s/he will be on Losec as well as a Statin drug - routinely - and discouraged from drinking water as well. I remember years ago when I worked in ICUs throughout Melbourne that all ICU patients were routinely put on Omeprazol - this was in the 80's & 90's - at that time older patients were put on oral Ranitidine initially but when this stopped being effective in alleviating the symptoms of heartburn which could have been resolved by increasing oral water intake then they were moved over to Losec from which I understand it is very difficult to withdraw - even if subsequently the water intake is increased - so it must do permanent damage in some way?
