Hi Wildfire,

I too purchased some stones over the holiday season, and the woman I

purchased them from threw several small tumbled, glassy dark stones into

the bag which looked purplish when held to the light. I went back and

asked her what they were and she said they were garnets. I understand

the almandite variety are purplish. Maybe that's the type they are.

Love,

Hi Wildfire,

Smokey quartz can have an undertone of purple. I live in Namibia and we get

quite a bit of the smoky quartz that has purple when you hold it up to the

light. This could be smoky quartz and amethyst, in that, amethyst is also

quartz. The quartz termination would be completely different, if it were

fluorite. Not only that, fluorite cleaves when you break it. If the little

pieces are like squares or dodecahedron shaped, it would be fluorite. If it

is six sided, it would be quartz. Quartz would also show striation (the

horizontal lines), where fluorite wouldn't.

Hopes this helps,

karen johnston

Karen,

Thank you, I've had such an affinity for flourite

lately amethyst comepletely slipped my mind. Thank

you for pointing that out. When I go home this

afternoon I'll take a closer look at the formation.

Thank you again!
