I live in Cozumel, Mexico, an island near Cancun. After some re-arranging of schedules with my business partner, I was able to coordinate a 3 day weekend off. The destination of choice was Merida, Mexico, in the heart of the Yucatan peninsula. This is a half hour ferry ride to the mainland, a quick cab to the bus station and a 4 and a half hour bus ride. > > I researched the internet and talked to everyone I know about what to do and see in Merida.... and, of course, where can I find a rock shop? No one knew of a rock shop, no rocks in Merida. > > Once I arrived and began to walk around, I immediately found a small rock shop, closed for siesta, open again at 7:30pm. In my excitement I neglected to note the address. My evening was full, Saturday nights being one of the nights that the town really shows off the Mexican culture. > > Sunday I boarded a bus and headed for a flamingo sanctuary 2 hours away. Absolutely stunning! (Not really part of the rock story) Anyway, I was too tired when I got back to find my rock shop. > > Monday I had breakfast at a highly touted restaurant. The food was fine, the service not particularly good. As I left and rounded the corner, there was my missing rock shop... open! I must have spent an hour there, and it was tiny and not particularly well stocked. Once the owner learned that I work with crystals, he pulled out a special jade bead. It was given to him by an old Mayan " curandero " , healer. The energy from this bead was explosive! Just amazing! > > Not for sale... not even to trade for a small selenite wand I happened to have with me. He had never seen selenite before although he had a copy of a magazine with photos of the giant selenite cave found in Mexico a couple of years ago. We both lamented that it was not open to the public yet... we both are aching to go. > > I purchased a nice obsidian piece and a calcified coral (?). It's a coral piece where the starbursts are filled with calcite. Very pretty. I'm sure I paid too much but I liked the owner. > > Walking toward my lunch spot, I spotted two clear quartz clusters in the window of an otherwise junky tourist shop. I ended up buying the larger for $5. The owner didn't have a clue about crystals and was happy to make a sale. > > After lunch I sat in the park with an ice cream and chatted with an 83 year old Mayan hammock salesman for 45 minutes. He told me of the hacienda where he grew up and how it had been sold to foreigners and turned into a tourist attraction. The entry fee is $6 and beers are $3. He can't go home. Very sad. > > Back to the rock shop to meditate with the Mayan jade bead. I sat with it for about 5 minutes, just until I was saturated with it's energy. Then a ten minute break, then another 5 with the jade. During my next break I found a jade bead for sale in his display case that was roughly the same size and color as his special bead. I bought it for $4 (made him take $5 for it) and pulled out my new quartz cluster from the junk shop. I placed my new bead on the quartz cluster along with the owner's special bead with intention to charge mine with the powers of the other. After about 5 minutes, I sat with his bead for one final round. Then he strung my bead onto a black string so that it hangs perfectly at my throat chakra. Since you live in Mexico, I'm sure you can find interesting stones.... don't forget that mayans were using plenty of stones for many purposes, like adorning, medical - even for out-of-body experiences - coloring, curing, killing... I'm sure you'll have more to tell about Mexican stones, after a bit of 'research'. Jade is not their best, as I know. All the best, and send my regards to that land.
