Matthew,

My experience with acupuncture and herbal medicine in treating mental disorders,

though not extensive, has thus far been fairly successful. Results will vary

from patient to patient, but they can be effective. The key is to get these

patients to want to seek help for their conditions, and you have to earn their

trust. Without these two components, probability of success drops tremendously.

Mental disorders are rather well-documented in Oriental Medical texts from onset

to herbal formulas and point prescriptions. It is a completely different system

from Western psychology or psychiatry.

Yes, it can Matthew! I personally have Bi-Polar Disorder, and I have

been studying Acupuncture for mental disorders. I'm not exactly sure

where the right places are, but there are online charts that show you

where the needles will be pinpointed. Most of the needles go around

your head, and since Acupuncture is believed to situate certain

chemicals in muscle groups, they have found that the chemical

imbalance that causes mental illness may be reformulated through

Acupuncture! I know it isn't a cure, but it does help!

Hi Matthew

Absolutely, yes!! Acupuncture and herbs as well as Asian bodywork

forms have proven extremely effective in helping these disorders. I

also advocate the use of meditation techniques to retrain the mind.

Especially for depression, meditation techniques such as the Inner

Smile Meditation (Mantak Chia's Healing Dao tradition) and Tonglin

(a simple traditional Buddhist meditation you will find in Pema

Chodron's " When Things Fall Apart " ) are very easy to learn and

extremely effective in changing the neurotransmitter mix in the

brain to alleviate mental suffering. There are many Chinese herbal

formulas which will smoothe out the problems associated with

depression as well as bipolar disorder and psychotic tendancies.

Acupuncture, too, can be very helpful and is not to be dismissed. As

with any medicine, it is extremely important to find an experienced,

compassionate, dedicated and qualified practitioner to help with

these problems. Especially if there is no organic damage to the

brain and these problems are suspected to have been the result of

emotional stress and trauma, the prognosis can be quite hopeful. But

even in cases of organic dysfunction, Chinese traditional treaments

can work almost like " magic " in many cases. Although, I can assure

you, it is not magic at all but a very well developed, complex field

of study. Good luck to you.

Thanks, Shanna

Hi Ming

Blue Poppy has published a wonderful text called " Chinese Medical

Psychiatry " by Bob Flaws and James Lake, MD. Depression and Bi Polar

illness are both covered in pretty good detail with acupuncture

suggestions and herbal prescriptions. I have found this Blue Poppy

series to be quite informative and helpful in the clinic. They also

have texts on treating diabetes, renal diseases and a wonderful

general text on modern Western Medical diseases. I own them all and

recommend them highly.

Thanks, Shanna

such information would be valuable for development of future
