Guest guest
Hi Anthony, I am in my last semester of school, and I just passed the NCCAOM herb exam this past June. Therefore, I am not even close to being an expert. On the other hand, it wasn't all that long ago that I was asking the same questions. If you are a visual learner, or just looking for different way to study the herbs, the cards at http://www.chineseherbcards.com/ are awesome. You have to put a little bit of time into learning the legend of symbols, but it is well worth it. I have heard that it is easier to put pictures/symbols into your memory, and I have found that to be true for me. Whatever method that you decide to use, just remember repetition, repetition, repetition. There is no substitute for it. I would also recommend to get into herb clinics ASAP (even just as an observer). This may be tricky, depending on the school that you attend. However, exposure is another key ingredient to remembering the herbs and learning how to use them. Another good way to get exposure is to help the professors/senior students to put together formulas for their patients. The more you get your hands on them, the more they will stick in your mind. Finally I would say that when you start treating patients, you need to take clinics with supervisors that are really good with the herbs. Additionally, make the effort to talk with you supervisor about using herbs for all your patients, even if your patients don't want them. I hope that this helps a bit. Good luck. --- In Chinese Medicine , " anthonygio2003 " <giordanoanthony@h...> wrote: > > Hi, > > I am a first year student at a TCM school and will begin herb study in > a few months. Guest guest
Hi Anthony, There are at least a couple of sets of flash cards that I know of, but I had not used them personally. When I was in school, I devised my own system of memorizing herbs - writing songs. While it worked for me, the downside is that it was very time-consuming in an exam to go through the whole song to get all of the information out of it! I was a tutor for 3 of my years in school (I went part-time, taking a total of 4-1/2 years to finish), and worked with many students who had difficulty memorizing their herbs. What I saw over and over again, is that the students who took the time to create their own memory tools had the easiest time learning herbs, because they thought about it and made a system that made sense for them. The flash cards with pictures are easy to mix up with each other - is it the turtle, or the fox that's crossing the river, and is the sun red or yellow? When choosing how to memorize, it is helpful to understand how you learn best. If you're tactile, then touching and smelling the herbs while studying will key you in to them. If you're visual, perhaps pictures would work for you. If you're auditory, songs, stories or rhymes could be your best bet. See what tools your upperclass members have used, and see which you are drawn to. Knowing how you learn is the best start. Good luck, Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine 753 N. Any other hints on how to approach the subject? Thanks, Anthony http://babel.altavista.com/ and adjust accordingly.
Guest guest
Hi Anthony, I've used flash cards to learn individual herbs, formulas and acupoints. For herbs and formulas i used the flash cards designed by Mark Travis, can't remember his company name. The individual herb cards helped alot. The formula flash cards helped me remember the indications of the formula but not what herbs make up that formula. For acupuncture, the Manual of Acupuncture flash cards are excellent. Justy a pity they are not lamanated as using them for a long time will damage the card. Hope that helps. Guest guest
Anthony, One of my classmates made up lyrics to classic rock songs for some of the herbs. I found thinking of them as having personalities helped, as did comparisons. Remembering how one herb differed from another similar herb helped me build a broader, more personal relationship with them. Also, remember, the big exam is the boards. You've got to stay in school to get to 'em, but focus on the herbs you'll need for whichever boards you're going to take. And stay cool. Have fun. As for mastering the subject? Let that go, my friend. Matery takes years, decades.
