Guest guest
List of GM failures and much better alternatives The GM industry constantly promises that wonderful products are just around the corner, for example GM allergy-free ryegrass. However it appears that there is no “allergy geneâ€. In fact 17 pollen proteins are involved with allergies but because they are in pollen they are linked to fertility. Even if was possible to stop the plant from making these 17 allergenic proteins in the pollen it is likely that the plant would not produce seed. These pollen allergens are similar in many grasses, and there is a recognised danger that that silencing genes may transfer to other agriculturally important pasture grasses. It also seems that creating salt-tolerant GM plants is also too complicated. Now it appears that using GM plants to produce medicines doesn’t work either. The plants add their own sugar chains (glycosylation) which makes it difficult to predict the doses, health effects and changes made. The idea of nutritionally enhanced GM plants also looks shaky. The complexity of the Genetic Modification required results in unanticipated outcomes, some of which could be toxic. This article explores some of the reasons why GM doesn't work. There is an opportunity for online debate to be had too. Eating a diet rich in ordinary fruit, vegetables and herbs is still the healthiest. Once again it appears that nature, with billions of years of fine tuning, produces superior products to 30 years of genetic engineering. We are ready to give it to them. Why do they need to poke our children with these vaccines? Why did not they become robbers or politicians? They can earn money that way too. Why do they have to malign such a noble profession? - A non pediatrician doctor, mother of an autistic child, at Hyderabad, India. Connect with friends all over the world. Get India Messenger.
