Re: Deonar Slaughterhouse modernization

Dear Shri Doshi:

Did you say slaughter house modernization in your letter

on Karmayog? Why not total closure of this abomination?

Because any number of studies show that meat eating is

one of the major causes of global warming. You cannot

also overlook the animal diseases and what the

meat industry feeds the factory bred cattle in this

insane business.

I think it was some 35 years ago, the slaughter

house at Bandra west (outside Bandra station) was

shifted to Deonar under public pressure, and I was

one of the invitees at the "inaugural" cattle slaughter

demonstration.

What I saw shocked me to hell and I immediately

stopped eating red meat -- cow, goat, buffalo, pig etc.

For some time I continued eating chicken, turkey,

ducks and fish. But for last more than 20

years I am totally vegetarian and now even my family

is so.

What did I see at Deonar?

A big room... a tunnel like formation, in which

cows, oxes, buffaloes are pushed in one line

with the kasai giving electric shock from behind

if the animal is not moving ahead. If the animal

has big horns, they break as it is moves ahead

prodded by the electric shock given on the rear.

Animal winces in pain, tears roll down the eyes,

it evacuates bowels.

At the other end when the head of the animal comes out,

a big clamp is put around the head and strong

electric shock is administered. The semi dead

animal is then hung upside down. With a big,

sharp knife the throat is cut, blood gushes out;

then with an electric saw the carcass is opened, skin

is removed, carcass is cleaned with big hot water

pipe, pieces are made and sent to refrigeration room.

You will be frozen if you stayed in that room for more

than an hour without adequate protective clothes.

Hence there is an alarm bell provided just in case someone

by mistake remained inside. Incidentally, I was the only

visitor who entered that room which was full of

carcasses. Because I like to investigate everything.

From the refrigeration room, the carcasses are

transferred to meat delivery vans (they are supposed to be

airconditioned, but mostly airconditioning

does not work) and then the meat supplier

hangs it in his shop for buyer to choose from. Flies

swarm around the chunks of this one or two day old meat.

Pieces are made according to the requirement of the

buyer. Then it is cooked and invariably meat

eating people (atleast many men) "enjoy" the meal

with a glass of wine, beer or hard liquor.

At the slaughter house the rules, inter alia, say that

only healthy animals should be slaughtered.

There are public health officers to certify whether

the animal is healthy or not.

But invariably diseased, old, sick, useless animals

are sent to the slaughter house and the booty is

shared right upto the DMC (Health) level and above.

Atleast in India, I do not think we have the menace

of factory farm animals. But the hormonal,

antibiotic and other injections are given routinely to

animals, which drugs, along with the diseases of

the animals go into your system.

About the mess that you see where slaughter

takes place, less said the better.

Now let me tell you, since you are talking of modernising

the slaughter house rather than banning it, what the

factory farm animals are fed.

"Among the cheap foods fed to cattle and pigs on

farms in the US are : human sewage sludge, dead

cats and dogs, chicken manure, slaughterhouse waste,

cement kiln dust, old newspapers, waste cardboard,

agricultural waste and old fat from restaurants and grease

traps. Those who eat meat are, of course, consuming

the residues of all these delectables. What a tribute

all this is to the glory of twentieth century civilisation.

If it is true that we are what we eat then this news

should alarm all meat eaters... Food from the US is,

ofcourse, imported freely into Britain".

Dr. Vernon Coleman in his book

Animal Rights Human Wrongs, page 261.

As quoted on page 281 of Pen Power -- an encyclopedia

of letters by Dr. Leo Rebello.

Enjoy your meal -- dead goat, sheep, cow, pig or buffalo.

You may also try dog meat dished in Chinese restaurants,

marinated, roasted rat or cockroach pickle to add to taste

and variety. And then write again whether we should

modernize the slaughter house at Deonar or ban it.

If you are a pucca vegetarian, mea culpa for

this gross description. But I am writing thus to shock

those who say they are vegetarians or animal lovers,

but hog on diseased and dead animals while doing

business in the name of animal welfare.

Best wishes

Dear Rebelloji,Namaste,Thank you for vividly describing the inhumane slaughterhouse procedures. The protagonists of meat-eating say that meat is first-class protein providing all the nine essential amino-acids in one item and that to get all the nine essential amino acids one will have to eat a variety of vegetable proteins. It is said that the Soya protein hasall the essential nine amino-acids but Soya hasbeen found to be not so good after all. Therefore it is time, I think, for the scholarly protagonists of vegetarianism to educate the laity as to what sort of easily-available and affordable combination of vegetarian proteins would be the proper substitute of meat. As far as the taste of meat is concerned I had found some excellent fake-meat and fake-sea-food dishes in some

Chinese vegetarian restaurants in USA. I understand that these fake-non-vegetarian recipes werefirst created for the vegetarian Buddhist monks. These dishes perfectly reproduce the taste of meat and fish and one cannot tell the difference.Regards,Sunil K.
