According to this article based upon a 20 year study, the Amazon

rainforest...depleted by human clearance...is becoming unable to " process " the

carbon dioxide levels in our atmosphere.

Not good news for the " home team " .

Scientists have sounded the alarm after spotting changes in the environment in

Brazil's tropical rain forests.

They say they have found worrying signs that the forests may become less able to

absorb the carbon dioxide emissions blamed for global warming.

Their long-term study in supposedly pristine areas reveals trees have been

growing and dying faster than before.

Scientists from Brazil and the US detected the changes while engaged on a

20-year study of the effects of rain forest clearance by humans.
