Guest guest
Thinking of chemicals. I’ve used cayenne pepper powder to keep ants out of the house. Take about two pounds of it and spread in a circle around the house, about 5-6 inches wide. Ants crawl in and go out the direction they came in. I don’t know about fire ants though. Try it. Works well on carpenter ants. Also, tansy works well on keep bugs away. Mice too from what I understand. I have a lot of cats that are supposed to do that though. But, cats have been genetically manipulated, picked, for pets rather than for hunters for so long, that my cats get hungry and I feed them and they don’t hunt. Only now and then. There are a host of things we can do to stay away from poisons. Or at least to minimize exposure to them. Sometimes though, you have to be willing to share at least a little. But, you do that even with the chemicals. Its just the propaganda that leads you to think otherwise. ed Carol Minnick [carolminnick] Monday, August 18, 2003 3:43 PM To: RE: Carol//Re: HEALTH Tidbits Excellent!! Guest guest
I wonder if cayenne pepper would keep snakes away, also. I have a little water garden, and I like to encourage the frogs to come, but every once in a while I’ll see a snake having lunch there (poor froggie). I’d rather have frogs than snakes, for sure! But, I wonder – if I sprinkle the pepper around, that would also probably discourage the frogs. I’ve also heard that tansy works well for repelling bugs, but have never tried it. But I’ve also heard that it can be very invasive, so if you do plant it, try to contain it so it doesn’t take over (unless you want it to). Guest guest
It can certainly be invasive. I pulled most of mine up and it still continues on. I’ve read this year though that it is just great to plant in among your green beans to repel the bugs that attack them. I hadn’t tried that in time, but next year will offer another chance. As far as invasiveness, where it invades it has now entered the classification of a weed. Or at least to pull it and perhaps to make an infusion of it to spray on plants. Does that sound plausible? Guest guest
Pepper would be BAD for frogs, once they are exposed to it, it will "stick" to skin causing a burning sensation ... DO NOT USE - Carol Minnick Monday, August 18, 2003 10:00 PM RE: Carol//Re: HEALTH Tidbits I wonder if cayenne pepper would keep snakes away, also. Carol Ed Siceloff [siceloff] Thinking of chemicals. Its just the propaganda that leads you to think otherwise. ed Carol Minnick [carolminnick] Excellent!! Guest guest
I know there is something. I pick them up and relocate them to another forest area. They have been eating all my chicken eggs, and the last one ate a baby duckling. He was almost killed by me, as I do not kill things, but I have to tell you I came dangerously close that time. It was a yellow rat snake, about 6 feet long, probably got that big eating my chicken eggs .... grrrrrr. I will ask my rehabber friends what they do. I don't think some of them look at snakes as kindly as I do and I suspect I know what the answer will be with them .... Guest guest
Before using the aspartame in a large area, remember, you would be poisoning a large area. Chances are quite good that you would be poisoning the snake, poisoning the frogs, poisoning the birds that eat both of those reptiles, poisoning the ants, etc.etc. It is not a poison specific to any specific creature. It’s a poison that is poisonous to all of us. And used in a large quantity it would act like any other “chemical poison.” Doing this in this manner would just make you a good customer of Monsanto. If you can’t stand the snake, keep your eyes open for him, catch him and remove him, rather than poisoning everything in his environment just to get to him. You can put out mouse/rat poison to get them. But, unfortunately, they often crawl away and die where you have to live with their stink while they decay, or, worse, you dog or cat picks up the carcasses and gets poisoned by them as well. Ed Carol Minnick [carolminnick] Thursday, August 21, 2003 6:27 AM To: RE: Carol//Re: HEALTH Tidbits Hi Doug, Not sure if the aspartame would work for snakes, but maybe I’ll give it a try. It would probably be a bit expensive for a large area. Carol -----Original Message----- Ed Siceloff [siceloff] Thinking of chemicals. Its just the propaganda that leads you to think otherwise. ed Carol Minnick [carolminnick] Excellent!! My next door neighbor was doing classes to become a wildlife rehabber, and then she unexpectedly died. But she showed me her books, and they did indeed look very interesting. Mother nature also rules my property. We have lived in this house for 35 years and have never used any chemicals. Carol -----Original Message----- luckypig [luckypig] I already have those, I am a wildlife rehabber in Florida, and pretty much let Mother Nature rule my property. The virus, which caused 284 deaths in 2002, is particularly dangerous to people over 50. Outdoor expert Brian Brawdy recommends these ways to avoid infection: Wear skin protection such as apparel with ExOfficio's BuzzOff insect shield; choose an insect repellent that is water-based and contains DEET or a citronella-based product for children; wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing; limit heavily scented colognes, soaps, shampoos and lotions; limit time outdoors at dawn and dusk; remove standing water, puddles and catch-basins in your yard; patch holes in screens, doors and windows; check children for ticks and insect bites; remember mosquito season is April through October; visit the Centers for Disease Control Web site at CDC.gov for up-to-the-minute, state-by-state virus status reports. Guest guest
Hi Carol: I figured that you needed a little reminder. We get tunnel vision sometimes when we get frustrated over something or other. So, the message was not really a warning. Just the reminder of something I know you already knew. ed Carol Minnick [carolminnick] Thursday, August 21, 2003 7:21 AM RE: Carol//Re: HEALTH Tidbits Ed, Thanks for warning me about that – I don’t want ANYTHING to do with Monsanto, or poisoning my land, so I’ll not buy the aspartame!
