Dr. Stanley Prusiner is the scientist who won the Nobel Prize inMedicine for his discovery of prions, the infectious agents thoughtto cause bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), or mad cow disease. The word Dr. Prusiner uses to describe the efforts of the U.S.government and the cattle industry is "terrible."[4] What are these"stringent protective measures"[5] that the Cattlemen's Associationis talking about, and how do they compare to global standards andinternationally recognized guidelines? In 1996, in response to the revelation that young people in Britainwere dying from variant Creutzfeldt Jakob Disease (vCJD), the humanequivalent of mad cow disease, the World Health Organization (WHO)issued seven "Recommendations." Numbers 5-7 were observations and/orrecommendations for further research. The first four recommendations, however, were concrete proscriptions to reduce the likelihood of madcow disease spreading to human populations.[6] To this day, theUnited States government continues to violate each and every one ofthese four guidelines. #1.
