Guest guest Posted April 16, 2003 Report Share Posted April 16, 2003 A nurse has died and another woman is on life support, possibly as aresult of the smallpox vaccine.Seven patients who received the vaccine have experienced heartproblems days after they were inoculated, according to the Centersfor Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.CDC Director Dr. Julie Gerberding announced Tuesday night that anyonewho has been diagnosed with serious heart disease, including coronaryartery disease, angina or a history of heart attack, should notreceive the smallpox vaccine.Although researchers can't yet determine whether the vaccine causedthe death and the other heart problems, CDC officials are choosing toerr on the side of caution."We didn't want to wait to make deferral while we figured this out,"Gerberding said.The Maryland state health department said the nurse died on Sundayafter receiving a smallpox vaccination on March 18.
