Barbaro is the winner of the Kentucky Derby. He broke his right hind leg very badly (in three places) in the Preakness. His owners have been doing everything possible to save him, and he has had the best of medical care. Even so, he had a major set-back last week and had to have additional surgery. He is a fine, brave horse and deserves to have a cushy retirement and life as a stud. He will never race again. His owners are to be commended for not having him put down and collecting the insurance money. They will make up for it, of course, if he recovers sufficiently to stand at stud.
