Guest guest
OK, Windows folks, especially those of you using IE and Outlook... this is important. PLEASE go over and read this article about the SirCam virus at About.Com's Antivirus site BEFORE you have a problem. I have been notified by another list owner that she has gotten over 1000 messages from infected individuals and frankly I don't want to go through that, do you? http://antivirus.about.com/library/weekly/aa071801a.htm This is an even sneakier version of the progressively more insidious worms that infiltrate your system through opening an email attachment. The trick here is to steal a file name (with its contents) from the infected person's " My Documents " file and mail it to all the unwitting recipients with the virus attached, with a .PIF, .EXE or .COM extention. Unfortunately these do not always " show " , and the text of the file makes it look as if the sender is asking for advice about the attached document or picture (this is one example of the body of the post): > Hi! How are you? > > I send you this file in order to have your advice > > See you later! Thanks DON'T OPEN ATTACHMENTS, EVEN IF THEY SEEM TO BE COMING FROM YOUR MOTHER OR YOUR BEST FRIEND. This worm has the even nastier payload of being impossible to remove without the proper registry fix; if you try to manually remove it without the fix, none of your .EXE files will be able to open afterwards (in other words, all the programs in your computer will be dead in the water). So don't delay, check out the website and the fixes, and be very wary of any attachments; these things come through so fast you can't even trust your virus software to catch them on scanning all the time, so better safe than sorry. Here is the McAfee page on SirCam: http://vil.nai.com/vil/virusSummary.asp?virus_k=99141 and the F-Secure description: http://www.f-secure.com/v-descs/sircam.shtml As you were, Listservites...
