Guest guest
Patricia: No, I am not in contact with Jillian Lavelle, and every little bit helps. It is interesting to me that most of the support for this movement is coming from out of state; it seems that a lot of Reiki folks in Florida are like deer in the headlights, so to speak; they either shrug and go take nursing or massage training, or just don't do Reiki. That is shameful to my eyes. As far as I can comprehend it, Florida cannot restrict the teaching of Reiki by anyone; only the people who approach the board to be CE providers for Florida massage therapists. You see where this is leading, don't you? Not only do Reiki folks have to train to be MTs, they have to maintain a license and certification with continuing ed... more money down the maw of the system that has nothing at all to do with the practice of Reiki. I am told by some that it is an issue of public protection, but I get only vague answers when I ask what the public is being protected from, usually flung about remarks about " charlatans " and " fraudulent practices " , and " poorly trained practitioners " . Since I have never heard of anyone being arrested or accused of these things, I wonder why these myths about endangerment persist, and who is propagating them. Thanks for allowing me to " let off some steam " about it ;-) " P.M.Gilmore, C.M.Ht. Guest guest
That's the kicker... in Florida, ordination does not cover practice, per se. It is much easier to use ministerial credentials in other states to cover lay healing work. I have a URL and a brief excerpt for you from Brother Daniel of the ULC, the most common non-denominational ordination available and the one I have myself. The homily was passed along to the Reiki coalition so that people can understand how they are treading on the edge of the law in many places, and how the ULC feels about that: > In looking at the legal issues surrounding Reiki, we've heard time and time > again " I don't need to worry about laws and regulation because I'm > ordained. " We at Sacred Path Reiki have always thought ordination afforded > protection from certain legalities, too. Check into the county and state laws regarding hands on healing provided by ordained ministers. That is the way a number of folks where I live get around the licensing requirements and fees. Though the laws are not as strict here as they are in some states, if you are an ordained minister and your " fees " are treated as donations then you don't have to be licensed or certified in massage therapy to provide Reiki treatments. Becoming an ordained minister is easy and can be accomplished over the internet in about five minutes (yes it is legal). The only thing you have to do is maintain an ongoing relationship with the church which is covered by subscribing to their newletter and keeping copies on file (for me that is a cost of five dollars per year). Other states may have different laws in effect but it is what works for us here.
