Guest guest
Michelle: Not a problem; I would have approved it anyway, it doesn't classify with what I am concerned with; it was a coincidence that your post came through at the same time I am swimming through another issue. We've just had a spate of folks joining lists to promote their own lately... having been a member of the list managers' forum for quite a while, I'm aware of the attitude of list owners in general about that sort of action, which is often just a " join, bomb and leave " sort of thing... they get furious and may even have the person's list removed. Along similar lines, have you noticed the person whose email is " reiki-1 " or something like that and mails the same post to all the lists regularly about a particular website's offerings? This person is on " no mail " and it seems like a rather lazy way to promote their site, just joining a bunch of lists they don't participate in and bombing them periodically with a post saying, " come see the interesting thing " . I don't know about you, but I get plenty enough spam without it coming through all my lists as well. While I might even be interested in it, because of the way it is sent I still classify it as self-promotional junk mail. All it takes is a little politeness and courtesy towards the members of the lists and the managers (which these sorts of people are obviously bereft of) to ask permission. They are using the email lists as a source of email addresses, a rather sneaky way of harvesting your email for promoting their own site, business, or product. I am especially dismayed by a new person who does not even take the time to introduce themselves to the list before dropping a promotional post in the laps of the members. It's just frankly rude. I have written this person in particular, but have never gotten a response (nor do I anticipate one). It is amazing, though, how a little sugar and the " magic word " works so well ;-) There is not a thing wrong with promoting your website or what you do, if you are concerned that this relates to you! No, indeed. Just consider the implications of how you go about it, and by all means, ask your list managers. Most lists are *not* democracies; they are discussion forums moderated by a single person or a small group who have a set of standards they want to maintain. There are also areas where links and articles can be shared more " permanently " , like the page, where there is a Links section, and a Shared Files area. Neither has been used much by this group, but they are available for all members to use. Michelle Hughes wrote: > > Oops, > > I am most sorry Caroline. Guest guest
Thanks Caroline for the info. I will keep it in mind. Yes, I have gotten the reiki1 posts to numerous lists. I had already known about the site and have posted a link on Caroline Myss' Discussion Forums but I do agree with you that this email approach is spamming. It seems to be a wave that is growing. People signing up as web-only and posting about all sorts of things. We got a Romanian artist posting to the SpiritWeb animal communication list about supporting his art coming to the U.S. Now if that isn't offtopic (nothing against his art - I haven't seen it)... He's sent the same note twice so far.
