Guest guest
Hi Folks: I realize this is totally off-topic, but when I read this article I wanted to share it with the group. I myself am an " email bride " so I know the positive side of developing a correspondence relationship that is honest and caring; but I am an adult, and my husband is, too. We were also very lucky, since I know of several adult net relationships that have failed miserably... mostly because of the fantasy aspects involved, the elusive ideal of perfect soul mates, and the tendency of infatuated people to avoid reality until it conks them on the head (sometimes ignoring their intuitions and other warning signs). We hear about this sort of thing every day, but seldom from the standpoint of the young people involved. Between the anonymity of the medium and the limited perspective of a child's experience, this can be tragic. We have handed the keys of a monster truck to our children, and even if we can trust them to drive it, it doesn't hurt to check behind the seats. I hope that if you have kids that are on the net, you take a bit of time to find out who they are talking to and what they are doing. Net Nannies are not good enough to prevent this. http://www.usatoday.com/life/dcovwed.htm -- Blessings, Crow " Look for Rainbows in the Darkness " -- --- Rev. Guest guest
These stories are chilling. Apparently, the FBI has agents that hang out in chat rooms trying to head this sort of thing off.If I remember the story correctly, there were some 400 arrests last year. I'm not sure if that means that the FBI's got too many agents on this and is therefore getting all of them. Unfortunately, I doubt this. The other possibility is that the problem is way more sever than I would have thought. I too, am a romantic beneficiary of the net. I met my lovely wife and soul-mate via computer. It's good to remember that I also met a couple of total nut jobs there as well. IMHO, the best thing you can do to protect your children is develop a relationship where they can be as honest as possible. >Caroline Abreu <crow > > < > > OT: Article on Net Stalking >Wed, 19 Apr 2000 09:25:21 -0400 > >Hi Folks: > >I realize this is totally off-topic, but when I read this article I wanted >to >share it with the group.
