First off, best of luck to you. Which school are you attending? The

focal point you ask about depends on a number of things:

1) How much time and money do you want to invest (i.e., BA, MA, MFCC,

Psy.D., Ph.D.)?

2) What theoretical orientation you want to build, and how well this

dovetails your personality (e.g., Psychodynamic, Humanistic,

Transpersonal, et al. I can send you a paper I wrote on Transpersonal

Psychology, if you are interested.)

3) What type of work do you want to do when you finish (e.g., private

practice, group practice, hospital, etc.)

Depending on the type of school and the degree you will be pursuing,

you will probably be required to take all of the basics (including

statistics and reseach methods), and can then mold your specialty as

you go. If you end up in the Southern California area, maybe you can

work with me in the group practice. You never know! I tend to

gravitate towards Jungian, Transpersonal and Humanistic approaches,

although I also use cognitive-behavioral, family systems, and other

approaches for an eclectic approach.
