I have never read the explanation… It's not a myth, it's a generalization, and generalizations are always both right and wrong. The simple fact is, sometimes gain requires pain, sometimes it doesn't. " No pain, no gain " at best is a rallying cry to get one through a challenging time. At worst it's used by sadists to keep you from running out of the room. One of its corollaries is that a medicine has to taste bad to do any good. I really believe that the experience of bearing necessary pain to accomplish a goal can be a very positive and growthful process. But pain for the sake of pain is a negative thing, and whoever encourages it is highly suspect. Doc PS: The expression does have other possibilities. A glass company could adopt the slogan, " No pane, no gain. " Or the folks that make detergent could say, " No stain, no Gain. " Farmers would say, " No rain, no grain.
