If I knew you better, I would recommend something. What I did was see the

single man play, 'Only the Truth is Funny' a number of times... The play was

the vehicle, of Rick Reynolds, a psychologist turned comedian, for processing

his garbage. As pointed out in his play, the fun began when he was able to

behave differently because of learning the reasons why he behaved the way he

did.. He made light of the darkness by relating what things he did to

survive in an alcoholic, abusive, dysfunctional environment. When my

darkness was penetrated, I could see the " funny " things I did to survive and

to this day laugh out loud when with relatives tell the story. Life is

difficult, said M. Scott Peck at the beginning of 'The Road Less Traveled'.

Life was difficult, Dr Peck... It is amazing at the same time it is funny

that we somehow survive.

As mentioned earlier, I was bless with a psychologist in my practice, when I

did my dark corners. She was right.. The corners are still there and there

is nothing that can be done about them. What I can do though, is learn and

grow from them. " In every dark cloud there is a silver lining(how

shmaultzy) " . Find it.

Alain Gougeon in fact. You know, when i take an appointment somewhere, i

just say my name is Gonzalez. Much easier for everybody.

By the way, i have a question rambling around for a long time. Somehow it

fits into what the list is about, i think.

My name is Alain Gougeon. The way it gets written corresponds in french, my

former language, to certain sounds that do not exist in spanish. As i am

living in south america since 1985, it is now 14 years that i don't hear my

name nor surname pronounced properly. I even call myself in a way that is

not my real name.

What about this? Well, i am not sure, but i have heard several times about

what a name can be to a person. Some say we elect our name before birth,

because it is our identification, it means what we are, and what we came

for. Anyway, like anything else, as we are beings of energy and as the

energy manifests from inside out, our name just like our appearance and any

doing of ours, is an expresion of us, and also, it has influences on us, by

the way of the " feedback " , that is, i know myself in the way i project

myself onto the non-myself and how that comes back to me, or better, how i

interpret that feedback.

Some spiritual movements, some hindus for instance, have their people take,

or given, a spiritual name. Because a name is vibration and that way, what

you are or meant to be can be reinforced.

So... that's more or less what i know about names. My question is for

anybody that know something about it and could clarify it. How is this

stuff? And how the fact that your name is mispronounced can do anything, or

mean anything?

My name essentially means " Christian " ...now I was sort of raised Roman

Catholic, but when people ask my religion, I tell them I'm a born-again

Pagan. :)

I have liberally clipped your post, Alain, and hope that the essence remains.

I have always had this problem. My full name is Ruth Caroline Gutierrez Abreu.

In Non-Hispanic countries, no one can seem to pronounce my maiden name or my

married name correctly. I don't even know how to get the " tilde " over the " ie "

in my name on a keyboard. For that reason, both have been " Anglicized " for ease

of pronunciation. I have even had problems with Caroline, as simple as that

seems... many people will call me Carolyn. That is one reason I shortened to

Caro... and interestingly, when I got my " medicine name " (which is in full

'Rainbow Crow Woman') I was interested to note that Caro and Crow sound quite a

bit alike phonetically.

Do I think it makes a difference? Until I was 7 or 8, my family called me Ruth,

and I personally demanded to be called Caroline. I think that is because of a

personal shift I experienced at that age. If you check out a Numerology chart

and add up the letters of your name, something that simple can have profound

effects on your behavior and how people respond to you. That is why some people

carefully choose names for their children that either won't be abbreviated or

have pleasing nicknames associated with them (like Beth for Elizabeth, or Meg

for Margaret).

I am going to have my venerable husband locate a book and tape that we have on

sound and resonance that would be germane to this concept. You might think

about having someone from " home " in France tape your name on a cassette for you,

so that when you feel disenfranchised you may listen to how your name is

supposed to sound, and allow the vibration to realign you to the " soul purpose "

it represents. I think Alain is a beautiful name. What is your full name, may

I ask?

The way I see it, Alain, is that when we begin to pronounce our names the way

others pronounce it, we begin to fit the image that *they* have of us. And

unless we are very carefull, and very diligent, we begin to fit ourselves into

the mold of how others perceive us, losing sight of who we really are. People

are forever mispronouncing my last name, Abreu, and I still will tell them the

way it *is*, in fact, pronounced.
