Hi everyone,

Can anyone tell me what tried and true brand of insomnia supplements you

take or have taken? No tincture or teas, bec. they act as diuretics on

me. Need something I can take on regular basis. I know, you will say to

get to the root of the problems, and I am trying, but a few problems are

lifelong/biological, etc.

Also, has anyone had a good response with 5HTP (Tryptophan) supplement?

Thank you for your help.

PS in tincture form, I have tried valerian, p.f., catnip, hops,

chamomile.

Also tried bach remedys and melotonin.

Take care.

Love and Peace,

Reneé and Jerry

Hi Renee,

I am a long insomnia sufferer too. I have tried every

herbal concoction under the sun. Changed my diet, used

progesterone cream etc etc. I tried 5 HTp and didn't

notice much, same with melatonin. I think I have

isolated it to a hormone problem that started in my

young teens. Have you noticed if your insomnia is

cyclical? If you'd like to check out the work of

Raymond Peat he has written some excellent articles on

hormone related problems. He nailed my case to the

" T " .

If you search on his name he has stuff on the web.

It's worth a shot.

Cindy

ps I can't offer unfortunately an herbal solution.

I've been on amitryptiline off and on for 20 years and

its the only thing that works for me. As much as I

HATE that fact.

Some Ayurvedic ideas for insomnia are:

to give yourself a warm sesame oil (or other oil)

massage, then have a warm bath, in the evening. It

feels absolutely wonderful. Or at the least, rub warm

sesame oil into your scalp and on the soles of your

feet. Sounds wierd, but really works, i have tried it.

Have some warm milk that has been simmered for a few

minutes (makes it easier to digest) with some herbs

like cardomon, nutmeg , and perhaps a little honey

(added afterward, not cooked)

Also, go to bed at a reasonable hour, before 10pm, and

make it regular- the body likes routines and tends to

adjust itself.

Eat warming nourishing foods that make you feel good.

Also, you cant go past meditation to help slow down

that mind chatter.

Good luck

What does your nutrition program look like? I don't like the word diet because

it sounds like some kind of

deprivation. :) No caffine, no simple carbs,(white sugar, white flower etc.)

read lables on your food and do

your best to eliminate all chemical additives in your food, especially MSG and

nitrites. Cut out all

hydrogenated oils. Use something like olive oil or safflower oil and use that

sparingly. Cut out red meat

completely for a while and eat chicken, turkey and fish sparingly.

If the herbal teas are acting like a diuretic it is possible that your kidneys

*need* a good flushing.

And for the ultimate " bandaid " , put a handful of sweet hops and some dried dill

in a small bag or enclose them

in a square of cloth and place inside your pillow case for a sleep pillow.

Unlike a dream pillow, these herbs

help you achieve a deep healing sleep without dreams. Don't use it excessively,

as dreamless sleep on a

continual basis can devistate your entire system.

*Note. Be sure to get " sweet " hops or even the dill may not cover the smell. :)

Does the insomnia affect everyone in the house? If so, there is an

environmental problem, and nothing can work until that's addressed. I have

seen a few cases of insomnia cured simply by moving a clock radio a few feet

away from a bed. Another common insomnia producing situation, is an

electrical supply panel in the bedroom. Occasionally an electromagnetic

field will affect one side of a bed but not the other.

Tryptophan is great. I never tried it, but lots of people did with good

results. The banning of Tryptophan in America is a scandal. The problems

with it were a direct result of a new process for growing it using bacteria

instead of extracting it from natural sources.

Another possibility to check here is a food allergy. I have seen a few

people out there with an allergy to corn, and persistent insomnia being one

of the symptoms.

What are 'sweet hops'? I have a hop vine and there used to be lots of hops grown in our area but I have never heard of this. Patty

I don't know if sweet hops is produced by different growing conditions,

or if it is a different type of plant, or if it is the male flowers or

what, but it doesn't smell quite so much like dirty sox. :)

Best thing I know for insomnia, I just remembered, is

some decent exercise. A good walk, whatever, a run if

you can, it calms all those stress hormones, and its

not often a physically exhausted person cant sleep-

its almost always only a stressed, emotionally or

mentally exhausted one.

Good advice Peela. The only other things I might add would be a hot bath (very hot for about 1/2 an hour), and a tablespoon of Lemon Egg.
