Guest guest
Hello Doc, I have a question for you, please. I've always been of the opinion that if you can make a tea or tincture of an herb, why not just take the herb in a capsule and get it over with? I don't like teas and tinctures. Thank you, Jean BaughOld*Glory Nubians-Boers-AnatoliansPlease visit our website at:http://www.cybergoat.com/JB/OldGlory.html***************************************************** Teas can be very beneficial not only when taken internally but also when used as fomentations. As far as comparing them to extracts, they do not quite pull out all of the necessary biochemical ingredients as tinctures do. I prefer using alcohol and apple cider vinegar in my extracts as these also act as catalysts for faster assimilation. Glyserine does not have this property and so is less effective. When my patients have alcohol problems, I have them put their dropperfuls of tincture into a cup of hot steaming tea which evaporates the alcohol. Hope this helps, Love, Doc Ian "Doc" Shillington N.D.505-772-5889Dr.IanShillington Can you skip the tincture process alltogether and make teas? Guest guest
Dear Jean, It is a question of assimilation. Most teas and tinctures are assimilated right in the stomach itself. Some capsules aren't even fully dissolved until they are through the stomach and into the duodenum = just ain't as effective ;o) Also, please refrain from using your URL in your signature line as this is strictly agains list policy. Guest guest
That may depend largely on the capsule. If you think the capsule doesn't dissolve, take a thyme capsule, drink a glass of water with it. In 15 to 20 minutes you will definitely know when the capsule dissolves. You will taste thyme and for a brief time will feel the thyme being activated by your digestive juices. Guest guest
Capsules break down fine, but tinctures, etc. get to your systems quicker! Tablets, especially coated " commercial " type, may be a different story! Guest guest
Putting many herbs into hot water activates them in a way that they don't get activated when powdered and in capsules. Tinctures activate many herbs differently than what happens with water. My older herbal books make a sharp distinction between taking tinctures and teas. I don't remember all the details, but i do know some herbs were suggested only as teas or as tinctures. This practice of putting herbs in capsules is really an outgrowth of pharmaceutical company practices. We're used to capsules and pills now, and so are prone to think that's the way to go. At best, many herbs just will not be active when taken this way. And some may actually cause a bit of indigestion. - Fanbelt herbal remedies 8/8/01 6:47:10 AM Re: [herbal remedies] newbie with a question I was told that capsules will not digest in the stomach so we do not get the same benefits from the herbs as we do with tinctures and teas. Now with some things, that may not be important, but with many, I think it is a huge advantage for the body to register frist from the tongue what is about to be dumped into the stomach. I mean with bitter tonics, it is well known that a large part of the healing happens BECAUSE of the taste reflex. There is a place for capsules, but I like to taste even the not so good tasting herbs. We have all become so soft, dont like icky tastes, but I think its good for us, and an important part of healing. In Chinese and Ayurvedic cultures, they recommend we get all the tastes at each meal, but in our culture, we dont like much besides sweet sour and salty. We are wimpy! my 2 cents love peela ===== May the long time sun shine upon you, all love suround you, and the pure light within you guide your way on. Guest guest
Remember when medicines for kids always tasted nasty? That was part of the experience of being sick. I strongly agree with you. I don't know if any studies have been done, but it just feels right that tasting the medicine would add to the effect. Didn't Linus Pauling say that tasting Vitamin C made it more effective? - Peela herbal remedies 8/8/01 8:09:55 PM Re: [herbal remedies] newbie with a question The problem I have with capsules is you dont get to taste the herb. Guest guest
Kari, I, too, am using acupuncture for weight loss. It does help but it still takes great willpower, exercise and you must eat healthy foods. It certainly does give me an added boost of willpower. It also helps me to stay conscious of when I am eating... I tend to nibble and not pay attention. If you would like, you can e-mail me off line and we can support each other in this endeavor! My name is Cindy and I live in San Diego. Bright Blessings Cindy - mahoganimommy acupuncture Monday, March 31, 2003 8:53 AM acupuncture Newbie with a question Hey there. I just joined the group today. I'm going for my second acu treatment today, and I am soo excited! I'm trying to lose some weight. Have any of you done acu for this? Did it work?
