Guest guest
Hi all, I have been reading a wonderful book this week and it occurred to me some of you may find it useful. Its called The Food our Children Eat, How to get Children to Like Good Food, by Joanna Blythman. She talks about the trend in Western society toward giving children 'children's food' (i.e. overprocessed, often junk food- such as fish fingers and spagetti at best, chips and coke etc) because of the frustration of them not eating healthy adult food- and she gives so much really good info and suggestions about how to get them back on a healthy diet- without 'forcing' them, which we know doesnt work. Its only been days since I started reading it but this evening I got my daughter to eat fish for the first time- and she loved it and wanted more- she is 7. She says in other cultures, children eat what adults eat, with pehaps some modifications. In our society, often we give children completely sepaate meals because they wont eat adult food. Here are her 5 basic points, for those who are interested: 1. Feed children the same food you yourself eat. 2. Socialise children into good eating habits by eating with them as much as you possibly can. 3.Consciously open up children's food horizons by introducing them to a wide range of tastes. 4. Keep on presenting them with a wide range of foods even if they resist them at first; they will learn to like what they are given. 5. Give them the freshest, most nutritious and best quality food you possibly can. The point is, she is saying, the only food fit for children's consumption is good food, and we can socialise them into eating it- we need to. This has been such an issue for me- and I have certainly given up over and over and fed my kids food I dont feel good about- and I am grateful for the simple insights this author has shown me- which are kind of obvious, but in the day to day, its easy to lose track. Just thought it may help someone else. love Peela ===== May the long time sun shine upon you, all love suround you, and the pure light within you guide your way on. Guest guest
Jo, Iron, as I'm sure you know, is nothing to play with, but being a child (or menstruating woman) gives you less to worry about. First, make sure he gets plenty of vitamin C (preferably with the iron intake) to facilitate absorption, and then, make sure that it is an organic form of iron! Following are some vegetarian, but noncommercial (ie. Mr. Big Buck$) sources of iron: 1/2 c. pumpkin seeds 1/2c. sunflower seeds 1/2c. dried peaches 1c. lima beans 1c. farina 1c. soybeans (depending on your attitude towards soy w/the controversy) 1c. great northern beans 1c. kidney beans 1/2c. dried apricots 1/2c. chopped almonds 1/2c. chopped black walnuts 1/2c. cashews 1c. lentils 1c. coconut milk 1c. black-eyed peas 1/2c. pecans 1/2c. shelled chestnuts 1/2c. raisins 1/2c. chopped filberts 1/2c. peanuts 4oz. tofu 4oz. tuna (you didn't say vegan, so I threw that in) 3 pancakes 1 large waffle 1c. speckled butter beans 1 english muffin This list is by no means all inclusive, and also mentioned many name brand$ of cereals that were fortified, hence higher on the list), and the list runs from most to least! Hope this gives you some ideas to start with until you fine tune his needs; including B-12, and zinc also (basically a potent all around children's multi)! In Health, Steve ----------------------------- Peela, that's very helpful stuff with regards to kids eating 'junk food'..I have t wo young boys myself and while I consider their diet to be fairly healthy.. there are still some things I just can't get them to touch!
