Guest guest
Good Evening All, I am in need of something to use on my boxer that is nursing puppies. She is trying to develop mastitis in one of her teats and all the vet said to do was massage it and use hot packs 3 times a day. Does anyone know of something else that I can do or use as these puppies are only 2 weeks old and will not take puppy formula. BTW you can see them at my site at www.geocities.com/the7thsin23 if you so desire. Thanks in advance! Guest guest
Kristie, I can tell you what I have found to be the most helpful for me when I get mastitis. I have 7 children and worked as a "birth attendant for over 100 home births. I have tried quite a few things but have now settled the 3 that I think are the most helpful. First of all keep putting a baby on the teat(s) that seem to be clogged or have infection in them. Keeping them empty is very important. Secondly, take cranberry juice capsules. Get either the capsules or the concentrate and add it to juice or water. (I am not talking about the Cranberry juice cocktail that you can buy in the grocery store.) You may be able to wrap the capsules in a piece of cheese for the dog or something. Cranberry juice is helpful with bladder infections because it keeps the bacteria from burying itself in to the lining of the bladder or adhering there. Well, it seems to have the same effect in the milk glands. If the bacteria can't cling to the lining of the sacks, and if they are kept empty, the infection will go away fast. Lastly, I do hot and cold treatments. When the pain is bad and I feel like I have the flu because of Mastitis I make a hot bath and take in a small pan of ice with me. I lay in the tub submerged in that hot water for 10-15 minutes and then sit up and put ice on it for 2-5 minutes. Then submerge the infected area for another 10-15 minutes and then ice again. About 3 rounds of this and the pain and red streaks are gone as well as my fever. Without doing these 3 things the normal course of mastitis would be 3-4 days. With this treatment the discomfort/pain/fever etc. lasts only a few hours now. take the cranberry juice capsules for 1 to two days until I feel no pain nursing at all. I have also found that stress, or a change in routine (like running too much or doing too much) is usually the root cause. I don't know how much commotion there is at your house or if this could be a problem for your "mom", but I thought I would mention it. Guest guest
tyvm Annette. From what I understand it is also caused by not " empting " them equally. She always laid on one side and with only 3 puppies they wouldn't empty this one. I have tried getting the milk out but can't. I can get a bit out but not much and the puppies will not take that teat. I will try what you had said and thanks soo much for responding. Guest guest
Hi Kristie, Suggest you use Castor Oil on the teat and use hot and "cold" packs together.
