Guest guest
Hi, my name is Beck, and I've joined your list because I feel I've exhausted the " traditional " forms of treatment for depression (and was never really comfortable with them anyway) and I'm looking for a more natural path to take. Over the last few years, I have been to countless psychiatrists, all of whom have prescribed myriad " anti-depressant " medications, to middling or no effect whatsoever. I'm not at all comfortable with psych drugs, and the side effects are horrific, so I'm asking you all for your advice! I'd like your input as to any natural remedies available to treat depression (and anxiety) - preferable something that is relatively easy to obtain (I'm in Melbourne, Australia, and we don't seem to have as extensive a range of " alternative therapies " as in the USA/Europe). Any suggestions? (Ok, while I'm at it, any input on natural remedies to assist in weight loss/control would also be much appreciated - those damn anti- depressants are like the pills in _Alice in Wonderland_, " This one will make you larger.... " !) Thanks so much for your time, peace, Beck
Guest guest
Beck, Can you tell me what meds. you have been on, and what kind of depression you have? Saint John's Wort is good for mild to moderate depression, and Kava is good for anxiety. 5HTP and SAMe is also good for depression as I am told. Depends on the severity of depression. I also, have taken several different anti-depressants. Some cause weight gain and some don't. Side effects all differ. You can email me privately anytime to discuss the details and to talk. Happy Springtime!! Love, Reneé and Jerry

One thing that you also might want to consider is being tested for food allergies which can sometimes manifest themselves as depression. Just a thought because a good deal of my blues lifted after I eliminated gluten, dairy and corn from my diet. Paulissa, " Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Guest guest
Hi Beck, I live in Perth, nice to hear from another Aussie. I was going to suggest St Johns Wort too, and Kava- but we cant get Kava in Australia except in Queensland, its illegal. But if you are looking for a 'herbal alternative' to antidepressants, you may find something, and it may get you a little motivated, but you would be short servicing yourself if you stopped there. I would be looking at your whole situation and working on as many levels as you can- that is, maybe your whole body is toxic from a lifetime of not so good diet,(this can lead to depression) maybe you dont get enough exercise, maybe theres lifestyle changes to make, maybe you need to really look after youself, theres bound to be heaps of ideas you can pick up from here if you hang around, I have learned heaps, and I have already done naturopathic training. The adrenals can be implicated in depression, or hormones. Its specific to each person. Maybe you could tell us more detail? good luck love peela Auctions - buy the things you want at great prices http://auctions./
Guest guest
I agree with looking at the " whole problem " I would cleanse the whole body first thing. And exercise is a great " mood lifter " once you get beyond the first few weeks...Mary Ostrowski - " beck " <whereisbeck <herbal remedies > Wednesday, May 09, 2001 8:22 PM [herbal remedies] Depression and a Natural approach > Hi, > my name is Beck, and I've joined your list because I feel I've > exhausted the " traditional " forms of treatment for depression (and > was never really comfortable with them anyway) and I'm looking for > a more natural path to take. > > Over the last few years, I have been to countless psychiatrists, all > of whom have prescribed myriad " anti-depressant " medications, to > middling or no effect whatsoever. > I'm not at all comfortable with psych drugs, and the side effects are > horrific, so I'm asking you all for your advice! > > I'd like your input as to any natural remedies available to treat > depression (and anxiety) - preferable something that is relatively > easy to obtain (I'm in Melbourne, Australia, and we don't seem to > have as extensive a range of " alternative therapies " as in the > USA/Europe). > > Any suggestions? > > > (Ok, while I'm at it, any input on natural remedies to assist in > weight loss/control would also be much appreciated - those damn anti- > depressants are like the pills in _Alice in Wonderland_, " This one > will make you larger.... Guest guest
Hi Renee and Jerry, I've previously taken Prozac, then Cipramil (Citalopram SP?), Xanax....they're the big ones they like to prescribe here... I've tried St John's Wort, and it did calm my nerves, but really the effect was minimal. As for what sort of depression I have - ummm...been diagnosed with a severe clinical depression...not sure what else I can tell you... Thanks for your input! Guest guest
Dear Beck, I totally understand your aversion to the "Alice in Wonderland" Psych drugs and completely concur with your observations of them. There are many things to take into consideration here and the first is Diet. The second is Cleansing. The third is Exercise, and the last is Herbs. The first place I'd concentrate on is the diet. Your entire condition could be caused by what you eat. 1. White sugar. 2. White flour. 3. Coffee 4. Alcohol 5. Pasta 6. Meat from commercial markets 7. Etc. Etc. Etc. And those Etc's could cover a lot. The ones above are the worst offenders though and would be a good place for you to start. Hope this helps and welcome to the list.
