100 proof Vodka

Hello,

 

I'm slowly getting ready to make my first tinctures.....but we have looked high and low for 100 proof vodka and it is no where to be found....and just recently in Michael Moore's book I learned why! It's illegal in California :-( Sooo.......can I tincture w/80 proof? That would make it 40/60 right? Do I need to make adjustments or is using this proof just fine? I want to be sure my first attempt turns out OK, so any helps would be most appreciated!

Dear Fern,

 

80 proof is OK for most tinctures but is inadequate for formulae made with many roots and hard barks. You need the stronger 100 proof to pull out the goodies there.

 

See if you can get a licence to purchase outside of the state for "commercial" reasons.

 

I am licenced and get mine in 5 gallon containers at 200 proof direct from the distilleries.

A liquor store will have 100 proof. or ask for everclear.
