Registered dieticians trying for a power grab with state and federal

bills that limit freedom of choice.

On both the state and federal level there are bills specifically

identifying Registered Dietitians to furnish medical nutrition therapy.

The state bill is AB-1444 Nutritional advice by Assemblyman Ken

Maddox.  The federal bill is The Medical Wellness Act of 2000 (HR 3887

and S 2232). While this bill promotes health and disease prevention

services for senior citizens, it discriminates against highly trained

professionals such as those with a Certified Nutrition Specialists,

chiropractors, medical doctors, and naturopaths from rendering these

services.

We oppose the section in AB-1444 which could make it a criminal offense

and jail an unlicensed professional for giving nutritional counseling in

prevention or treatment of medical conditions. In California we have

many highly trained professionals like Ayuvedic, homeopathic,

naturopathic etc who should have the right to provide nutritional

counseling to consumers.  It is political impossible for these

professionals to get licensing in California. Senator Burton's Bill

SB-577 Health: complementary medicine is designed to provide consumer

access and protection when receiving complementary medicine from

unlicensed professionals. We do not object to Registered Dietitians

being authorized to be paid for their services.

Go to www.citizenshealth.org/newbills.htm  Read instructions at top of

page for state bills.  Then click on " Bills we Oppose " for

background.  AB- 1444 will be hear April 17, 2001 in the Committee on

Health.  After HR 3887 and S 2232 (the federal bill) you can send

emails to federal representatives by simply entering your zip and

address.
