You could try raw honey, or stevia - I personally don't like stevia, but lots of people are happy with it.

Molasses, raw organic honey (this means non-pasturized or unheated), molasses sugar or any unrefined sugars which are very dark in color. Also stevia.

Stevia comes in either liquid form OR in crystallized form (usually

with maltodextrin for flaking). The aftertaste is a little funny, but

it does a great job of sweetening things. A little does go a long

way, though, since it's many times sweeter than sugar. As long as you

don't use too much, the aftertaste SHOULDN'T be much of a problem.

Bonus if you mix other things in like cinnamon. Stevia is VERY VERY

safe, you can't overdose on it, and it has no artificial anything,

nor does it add any calories or carbs or anything, so it is quite

safe for diabetics. I do know that it does NOT carmelize during

baking like sugar does, so the consistency may not be the same. Do

not substitute stevia for sugar on a 1:1 ratio, however. There are a

few stevia cookbooks around that have lots of recipes that might

help. It does have a different taste to it, tho, so do keep an open

mind.

Also, I've seen different nectars (for example, agave nectar--both

lighter and darker colors--and others) at Whole Foods, does anyone

know how these work, how to use them in cooking, the difference

between the two types, etc?

If you get it in the white powder form the after taste isn't so bad. the only problem when you cook with it is the volume problem. 1/8 a tsp will sweeten as well as 1 cup of sugar but then the consistency is off.

Hi Emma,

yes, stevia is a natural sweetener from the stevia plant. I don't like the aftertaste. I have it in a liquid form, so it can be used in cooking also :-)

Stevia is tops.

Honey used in moderation (once in a while - not continuous usage) is OK.

Maple Syrup once in Blue Moon.

Hi Nadja.

Stevia is a plant.

The bulk herb bins in a health food store usually carry Stevia.

Ours has Organic Stevia in a powder to sweeten most anything and a cut leaf for teas.

If you don't have a health food store nearby tell me where you live and I can better advise you as to where you can find it.

Don't buy the white, processed Stevia or Stevia liquid. They are nasty.

They don't mix into a hot beverage and they have a bad after taste.

Growing your own plants is the most fun. I have some and love them.

Re: Fw: Herbal Remedies - Re: Sugar

Hi Kristin.

I have gotten Stevia plants from Home Depot in the herb section on occassion.

I got some more at a local Botanical Garden plant sale.

And still others were purchased on line.

You can even find organically grown Stevia plants on line.

As I recall they cost $3 or $4 for each plant plus shipping and handling.

Finding them locally is the more economical. If you have an Extension Service/

Botanical Garden in you city or town, they could most likely direct you.

Once you get them growing in a place they like, you'll have all you need as they spread

and come back each year.
