This perennial herb has tuberous roots, oval or heart shaped leaves with a characteristic smell when crushed, and solitary pale green, purple patterned bell flowers on long stalks. Seeds need light to germinate. My trellis is 8' high by 6' wide. With 4 plants the whole trellis is covered and the codonopsis grows over the top and down the other side. The flowers are numerous. Properties ; Taste: Sweet and neutral Meridians: Spleen and lung Function: To replenish qi Uses: The roots are used as a general tonic and as a less expensive substitute for Ginseng. It is more effective than Ginseng for reducing adrenaline and therefore stress. It is potentially beneficial for AIDS, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy patients, as it reduces the side effects of toxic drugs by increasing red and white blood cell counts. Dang Shen is given for breast cancer, asthma, diabetes, heart palpatations, memory or appetite loss and insomnia.
