Guest guest
When I was taught how to make tinctures, emphasis was placed on creating the tincture at the proper phase of the moon, and draining (sorry, I forget the proper term for that) after one full moon's phase. I can't remember which moon phases any more, and actually am skeptical about the need to go by the moon. Anyone have any knowledge of this? Guest guest
Hi Lif, I think there is something to be said for making tinctures on a new moon and pressing them on the full moon. Farmers have planted crops by moon phases for many years - the Farmer's Almanac. The pull on the earth is the greatest at the full moon affecting tides so I think it stands to reason that you would be able to extract the most from the herbs at the full moon. Can you make a good or strong tincture and ignore the moons? I'd say yes you can, however, would it be better if made on a new moon and pressed on a full moon? I'd say yes to this also as ideally this scenario is best although it's not a be all end all. There are several tinctures we make that are instantly very strong. One is Habanero pepper or cayenne tincture and the other is called Total Tonic where you put fresh organic: ginger root, garlic, horseradish, onion and cayenne peper in a blender with raw apple cider vinegar. We made this one with a Champion juicer once and all of had to leave the house it was so strong. Once the house aired out a bit, Ian wore a swim mask to finish making the tincture. When taken right away this tincture is stronger than if you let it sit shaking it every day for 2 weeks. After 2 weeks it actually mellows out. But then take a tincture that is made from very hard dried roots. To extract all the properties from these roots it would be necessary to wait at least 2 weeks and longer would most likely do an even better job of making a stronger tincture. Does this answer your question? Guest guest
Hi Lif, Actually, this is an old farming tradition which has gone on for centuries and there is some validity to it. When there is a full moon the gravitational pull is stronger and more of the goodness is pulled from the herb. However, I have one more gallon of 2 year old Echinacea that needs pressing soon and you can bet it'll taste awesome regardless of when I press it as it's been extracting for such a long time. Traditionally, you blend and mix on the New Moon and press on the Full Moon 14 days later. Furthermore, until these new perking processes came along, it was necessary to let it sit for the full 14 days to get the best out of it. With this new straining "perking" process the whole thing can be done in 3 hours and it does get all the vital nutrients out. Of course these machines cost $8000 and up soooooooooo, until that little bit of change comes along, I'll continue to mix on the New and press on the Full as I have for years ;o) Best regards, Doc Ian "Doc" Shillington N.D.505-772-5889Dr.IanShillington - Lif Strand herbal remedies Friday, March 30, 2001 3:34 PM [herbal remedies] Making tinctures When I was taught how to make tinctures, emphasis was placed on creating the tincture at the proper phase of the moon, and draining (sorry, I forget the proper term for that) after one full moon's phase. Guest guest
The longer you let it "perk" the better, up to about 6 months. After 6 months it is redundant as all of the goodies have been extracted. When I first made that batch, I had 20 gallons of it and with my other batches, it has just taken me that long to use it up. The best I ever made.
