Guest guest
Hi Kris and Dena, > http://www.rheumatic.org/soy.htm I've read the article, which is an excellent one (scary too, of course). Dena was right, of course, when she stated in her email that just because something is grown organically, doesn't mean the seeds aren't GE. NOW I realize that only makes sense! Somehow, even though nobody asked, I feel like I have to " explain " myself. The last couple of years I have eaten soy on occasion since I gave up meat and poultry. Since I'm not that crazy about it, except as a lasagne filling substitute, I don't eat it often. Which is good after reading that article. I would just like to think that if I am eating it, that at least it should be certified organic and non-GMO. And apparently I've been eating GE rather consistently since only recently did I find one that actually said non-GMO. And then add it to what Ian's heard about the same machines being used for both GE and non-GE. Many sighs. Anyway, I would like to encourage everyone who eats soy in any form to read the article because it's a good link that Kris posted. Guest guest
Hi Lif, > For those who do like soy products (I love tofu!) > and would like to grow > their own, does anyone have a source for non-GE > seed? I don't know if this will be useful to you or not, but I wrote a couple of the sprout seed companies that I used to order from when I was growing organic sprouts. I'm planning on doing that again. Unless I am wrong, and that is certainly possible, I don't know why you couldn't use their seeds to grow in dirt outdoors. Anyway, one of the companies wrote back, and although I cannot guarantee this is correct, following is the response I received. Hi Valerie, Thanks for taking the time to forward your question. We do carry certified organic non GMO soy beans. Anything that is " certified organic " , by the new standards published by the USDA, cannot be GMO. Please note the following article from the CCOF. Sincerely, Sunorganic Farm PRESS RELEASE California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF) Santa Cruz, California, December 20, 2000. CCOF congratulates the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Secretary Glickman for putting out final national standards for organic food. The new federal standards are a good working definition of organic production and are true to the organic philosophy and approach that has gained the confidence of many consumers. As a market driven movement, organic agriculture has grown in the U.S. from an estimated $78 million in retails sales in 1980 to an estimated $7.7 billion in retails sales during 2000. Consumers are voting with their dollars to support an agriculture system that works with nature to produce healthy food, healthy soil and a healthy environment. The new standards clearly reject the use of genetic engineering methods, ionizing radiation, and sewage sludge for fertilization. USDA was clearly responsive to the 300,000 public comments made by the public during the two preceding public comment periods. CCOF is a nonprofit membership organization of 985 members who produce and process organic food. Formed in 1973, CCOF represents all segments of the organic industry, from some of the largest farms in the nation to many small producers and processors. In addition to third-party certification, CCOF is dedicated to advancing organic agriculture through education and advocacy. CCOF was instrumental in writing the California Organic Food Act of 1990. In 1990 CCOF established the Organic Farming Research Foundation to help fund organic research on the farm level. CCOF is accredited by the International Federation of Organic Movements (IFOAM) and by USDA's ISO Guide 65 program. CCOF will continue its commitment to the consumer to ensure that organic products in the marketplace that have the CCOF seal have been subject to a through review process by an organization knowledgeable and dedicated to organic principals.
