Re: [herbal remedies] NEWBIE INTRO

Dear Paulissa,

Not off topic at all and welcome to the list.

If you are truly serious about getting an ND degree I would actually recommend you do it via correspondence courses. There are three or four mainline colleges which offer what they call a degree in Naturopathy but usually you end up with an NMD = Naturopathic Medical Doctorate. I researched two of these colleges a few years ago and this degree they offer is a bastardized version of being a medical doctor and the emphasis is on handling symptoms much like the MD (allopath) rather than looking for "causes" as a true Naturopath would.

I received my doctorate (degree) from Trinity College (accredited by ANMA - American Naturopathic Medical Association, ANMCAB - American Naturopathic Medical Certification and Accreditation Board, and CNRA - The Council on Naturopathic Registration and Accreditation in Washington DC.). Trinity is situated in Indiana and will let you do the entirety of it via correspondence. It was not "easy" at all, so if a person was looking for a "diploma mill" (and I don't think you are) then they would want to pass on Trinity for sure. Besides all the traditional study, the final qualification is a 45 page 7,000 word thesis and they do like originality in your composition rather than just quoting other "authorities". It is not a piece of cake but it was extremely enjoyable and enlightening. I learned a great deal even though I didn't always agree with my lessons. The main reason I started the program was so that I could set up a practice (I was already a practising herbalist of several years), but after the first course I put my heart and soul into it as I truly gained alot from it, and enjoyed it immensely. There are only 4 states where one can practise with their diploma only without having to get a licence (which would entail passing an NMD exam as above). I believe they are New Mexico, Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming (could be wrong there as it's been a while).

Doctor Richard Schulze never ever did get a formal degree as an ND but studied directly under Doc Christopher for years and years and it was Old Doc who layed the mantle on him one day kinda like a knight being knighted. If you trace the root word of "doctor" you'll find it means "teacher" and you'll find that both Docs embodied this definition to the ultimate.

If you are not interested in setting up a practice or in teaching, then I suggest you forget about it and do Doc Christopher's School of Natural Healing and get your MH (Master Herbalist) degree from his school which is still run by his son David Christopher. Old Doc (I'm young Doc ;o) was the greatest herbalist of the twentieth century and his school is second to none. You'll learn everything you need to know about healing from his school and will be able to out perform any MD in the field of chronic illnesses.

Trinity's website is: http://www.trinityschool.org/

The School of Natural Healing's website is: http://www.herbsfirst.com/snh.html

Hope this helps.

Love,

Doc

Hi Everyone,I am the new kid on the block. My name is Paulissa, I am 35, married and live in Omaha NE. I decided to start investigating nutritional healing etc. in response to my asthma/bronchitis. I have since become very interested in pursuing a dr. of naturopathy degree, but Omaha is not exactly a bastion of alternative healing at the moment. There are no schools here for this particular profession, and only one homepath listed in the local phone directory.I am thinking that perhaps I should contact the health food stores for resources? And I have been searching for schools on-line as well. There are distance courses, but what is the list's opinion of distance courses for this specialization? If I have strayed too far off topic please let me know. I look forward to learning and getting to know each of you.Federal Law requires that we warn you of the following: 1. Natural methods can sometimes backfire. 2. If you are pregnant, consult your physician before using any natural remedy. 3. The Constitution guarantees you the right to be your own physician and toprescribe for your own health. We are not medical doctors although MDs are welcome to post here as long as they behave themselves. Any opinions put forth by the list members are exactly that, and any person following the advice of anyone posting here does so at their own risk. It is up to you to educate yourself. By accepting advice or products from list members, you are agreeing to be fully responsible for your own health, and hold the List Owner and members free of any liability. I missed the whys & wherefors, but the thought occurred to me - do you or is there any support groups around? Sometimes they can be a valuable tool.
