The ingredients on the package are filtered water, certified organic brown rice milled, expeller pressed high oleic safflower oil, sea salt. However, although it doesn't have carrageenan, it does say on the bottom, " Not for use as infant formula. " For anyone who is interested, I found a rice milk recipe a few days ago that I will be trying (one of these soon days). http://www.braintherapy.com/ Organic rice milk (Gerson Institute E-News, e-news 24Apr2000) [Edited for brevity] The substitute for Soy Milk is Rice Milk. Commercial rice milk has salt and oil in it. You must make it yourself, not buy it. Boil brown rice until tender. Whip in blender with distilled water until smooth. Add more pure water to bring to watery milk level. Add unpasteurized honey to sweeten a little. Filter through cheesecloth or stainless mesh to trap large particles. Add whatever flavoring you wish. Refrigerate in a tight container. Stir before serving. I wonder how long this lasts? For those who can afford it and have the desire, there is a pretty nice looking machine I've seen that is a Juicer, Grain Mill, Soy/Rice Milk Maker. It does cost $170, however. http://www.living-foods.com/marketplace/nutrisource2000.html Valerie Get email at your own domain with Mail. http://personal.mail./
Guest guest
Hi Lisa, I found this. Seems to be pretty much the usual for rice milk though. Don RECIPE: RICE MILK 4 cups hot/warm water 1 cup cooked rice (I've used white or brown) 1 tsp vanilla Place all ingredients in a blender until smooth. Let the milk set for about 30 minutes, then without shaking pour the milk into another container ( i use an old honey jar) leaving most of the sediment in the first container. This makes about 4-4/12 cups. Notes: When I have used cold water and the rice was taken out of the refrigerator, it just doesn't come out that well. I don't know why but its best to use warm water and warm rice (you can nuke it if its leftovers but freshly made is best) I have even let it set longer than 30 minutes (overnight) without it making a difference. - Lisa Belcher herbal_Remedies Thursday, September 26, 2002 12:54 AM [herbal remedies] Rice Milk Hi all, Can someone give me a good recipe for Rice Milk for a toddler please? Guest guest
Hi Lisa, Use warm just to make it. It should refrigerate quite well after wards. No, I awoke at 3:30 AM. When I wake up I get up as I have learned a long time ago not to fight it. I just never seem to be able to get back to sleep. Body has its own rhythms and such. :-) Don - Lisa Belcher herbal remedies Thursday, September 26, 2002 5:36 AM Re: [herbal remedies] Rice Milk Hi Don, BTW, what are you doing up at this time? Is it not middle of the night for you?? Thanks for this. When you say use warm, do you mean not to refrigerate after it's made? Or do you just mean for the making of the milk? Guest guest
Lisa, I do believe that one could use any rice in this recipe. I am not so sure how that gooey-sticky-glue-up-your-insides Uncle Bens 1/2 minute rice would work but for good quality rice I do believe that you could use whatever kind you wanted. It appears that as long as you use warm rice and water you should have a good emulsion that will work really well. BTW, basmati is a very good rice. Personally, when I eat rice I use wild. Just me. I like the nutty flavor. Don - Lisa Belcher herbal remedies Thursday, September 26, 2002 6:40 AM Re: [herbal remedies] Rice Milk Thanks Don :-) wow, up at 3:30. I'm usually still enjoying dream land then LOL BTW, does this rice milk work with any rice? We usually eat Basmati? Lisa
Guest guest
Lisa, Extract, pure natural of course, would be easiest but you can use the pod if you know how. It is just to flavor it and give it some taste. Although, I am sure that pure vanilla has some medicinal values to it. Don - Lisa Belcher herbal_Remedies Thursday, September 26, 2002 2:11 PM Fw: [herbal remedies] Rice Milk Don, The vanilla ingredient, is that vanilla extract, as you'd use in cooking? I've only found that or the vanilla pod??? Lisa - Lisa Belcher herbal remedies Thursday, September 26, 2002 7:59 PM Re: [herbal remedies] Rice Milk Hi Don, I tried the wild rice but neither my son nor my husband liked it. Basmati has received overall favourable response :-) And naturally I am talking about the organic kind! Guest guest
Lisa - Where do you get your Basmati rice? I get it from http://www.bulkfoods.com in 5 lb bags. It is organic. I buy a lot of stuff from them. They have just about everything! All kinds of dried fruits, nuts, grains, dried beans, baking supplies that you can't find in the supermarket. I have bought vanilla beans, alfalfa seeds, bee pollen, etc. Much lower prices than in the stores (if you can find it in the store).
