Guest guest
Dear Valorie, Have just got a fantastic little bbok on Florida Wildflowers (which is where I would rather be now...grin...) and no mention of Chapparal. However, we are normally very wet down here - at the moment it might grow....Love Penny
Guest guest
There are about 3 or 4 species of Chaparral (AKA creosote bush) found in the wild, depending upon which botanist you consult...but only Larrea tridentata is found in the US and this is the only species found commercially (live or processed) to my knowledge. Larrea mexicana and Larrea glutinosa are Mexican and South American species which I know little about. Larrea divaricata is also South American, and sometimes found commercially, but usually considered to be the same species as the L. tridentata. Larrea tridentata var. arenaria is only found in California (according to sources at the USDA), but all other Varieties of that species found in the US are found in the wild from California to Texas (the 6 states-CA, NV, UT, AZ, NM, TX), but NOT east of Texas. The steamy climate is just not right. Though I suppose it could be grown in Florida in a nice dry spot. Just not apt to be found growing in the wild. Joanie, whose collection of New Mexico wild flower images includes Chaparral and SHOULD still be filed away in the office of the New Mexico Natural Heritage Inventory in Santa Fe. Guest guest
Thanks for looking it up, Penny. I had a thought after the fact that I could have just suggested checking with the Extension Service there in Florida instead of asking you and Jamie. I forgot who inquired so maybe they will read this and can check out the Chaparral that way.
