Okay, I'll try the grits. We don't eat the grits anymore, its WHITE for goodness sake. So I guess the ants can eat that, and I will stick with my oatmeal.

Dear elaine, Put instant grits all round the trash can and on the actual red anthills. Just sprinkle it. The ants take it to the queen who eats it and then bursts when shedrinks water. It may onlytake one application but it may take two.don't put toomuch down - just enought to make it a tasty titbit....... Works fine for me.......Love Penny (however, it does not stopanother hill ocuring elsewhere so I just keep vigilant - I prefer thatto using one of those extremely toxic ant killing chemicals!!)Federal Law requires that we warn you of the following: 1. I would not use dormant oils on my herbs. Maybe on fruit trees, but not on

herbs.

Insecticidal soaps, such as safers, would be more useful here...and

are registered in most states for use on ridding soft bodied insects from

herbs.

here is one of the many fact sheets i used to give out in NH when someone

would call with this question.

http://www.ag.ohio-state.edu/~ohioline/hyg-fact/1000/1612.html

as far as soil...do you have a compost heap or a worm bin to make soil with?

I grew great plants out in a little garden in the woods,,,,I mean 8 foot

high angelica..4 foot wide Sweet Coltsfoot leaves, using no fertilizer at

all except bunny poop, seaweed and what my huge compost pile gave

me....anyway...all for now...Joanie

Hmmmmmm wondering if peppermint oil sprayed on the house out there will discourage dirt dobbers. I hate those bees. They make these awful nasty homes of dirt on the outside of houses down here in Florida. That would use way too much oil. Wonder where I can get it CHEAP!

Have you tried peppermint oil? The ants hate it. I don't know about the worms, but maybe putting it on the outside of the compost bins where the ants climb in would be effective.

BTW this is a great household tip, if you see ants anywhere in your house sprinkle a few drops of peppermint oil (sometimes you have to re-apply everyday for a few days, but they eventually get the message and LEAVE) much better than poison, and the house smells great to boot.

While we are on the subject, did you know that orange oil will repel wasps. I think it does something to their antennae that they find distasteful. Anyway it doesn't kill them just gives them a strong incentive to go someplace else, and does it without making them aggressive. And again, smells good too.

Penny, how do you keep ants out of your compost? I tried that , and my worms and compost of nice scraps(all veggie and fruit, coffee grounds etc) was invaded by red ants when we lived over on the east coast. So I haven't tried it again. I checked on my worms, that I had imported, and the ants were stinging them to death. I felt sooooo bad. Thats why I never tried it again. Maybe you know a way to do it so the ants stay out? Elaine,

You might _Try_ NOW brand of Peppermint Oils, and mix it

with a vodca, or similar to defuse it and spray it on with a spray bottle

from Walmart. NOW brand oils are inexpencive, and not all, but some

of them test pretty good for health benifits. Some of course are

not good quality, but some are. They are usually pretty reasonable.

I don't have the peppermint, but the Spearmint oil that I have is 1 OZ

for $3.95. Is that reasonable enough?

Hope this is helpful.

don't bother with NOW brand. Their quality is questionable, several are diluted in other oils...just an inexpensive healthstore brand. If they are all you can find, well, fine....but do NOT go looking for them.Joanie

No problem. I love the NOW EO's for aromatherapy. I also use them in my oil to help relieve my muscle pain. I use large amounts of Lavender EO and I do like theirs. I agree that some of their oils are not that great but some are good at a good price.

Thanks Gina,

I was out this evening. I appreciate your putting up the

web address. I realize some people have their predudices regarding

different brands of Essential Oils. Personally, I muscle test to

check quality, and if someone needs a EO, or Remedy, etc.... and then figure

out where.... These NOW oils do test good for a lot of things.

Not all of them, sometimes a same species oil in a different brand

will check to work better, but for the price, these oils are incredable.

I bought 6 EO's Retail yesterday for $35.00. That's a pretty

good deal.

Hope this helps.

It is hard to know the quality of some essential oils. I usually buy larger quantities from Rainbow Meadows www.rainbowmeadows.com

for my herbal soaps and body preparations. The quality is supposed to be good enough for medicinal use but as I am not sure, I usually purchase Oshadi or Rele essential oils for that purpose.
