Guest guest
Ummm.... I have seen no clear evidence that anything actually extracted from grapefruit seeds has this effect, unfortunately...though that does not mean that it might not be so. What I HAVE seen is evidence that all those extracts that have been tested and found to have preservative qualities (as that is what the tests I have seen were set up to test - preservative action) have been *spiked* with a heavy percentage of nasty chemical preservatives, such as Benzethonium chloride. Benzethonium chloride is a toxic disinfectant (quaternary ammonium compound, cationic detergenthfB3ntained mainly in cleansing agents but also in locally active medications (against sore throat, spermicides)..very nasty and caustic stuff....see this URL from the Swiss Toxicological Information Centre. http://www.toxi.ch/eng/news_882952862_12176.html I would NOT trust any GSE extract for internal use at this point, EXCEPT for that i made myself...but I would not bother making it myself at this point. If I wanted to test the efficacy of grapefruit seeds, I would just chew or grind them whole and swallow..or juice them in my juicer. If extracting is necessary for any med effect, it is because the seed extractives combine with the menstruum to make another compound. And if that menstruum is a nasty chemical like the above...well, forget it...I do not trust it, and suspect most GSE extracts of being money making scams, until I see evidence that proves otherwise. ANd so far, I have not. Guest guest
I wonder if that applies to ProSeed GSE. They claim it doesn't. Guest guest
do you have more info on ProSeed? A website? I just know that a whole lot of GSE's were tested for preservative action, and the only ones that worked as a preservative, had preservatives added. There is a lot more to learn about this...but at this point, i remain skeptical of all commercial GSE extracts.Joanie ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I wonder if that applies to ProSeed GSE. Guest guest
i came across directions on how Grapefruit seed extract is made, a 3 year old post in my files...Joanie (who just realized I have several personal messages from women on this list I have yet to answer...sorry...I just get this way and procrastinate..will catch up) http://www.nutriteam.com/gsewhat.html They describe the procedure of getting gse: " 1) Grapefruit pulp and seeds (the by-product of expeller-extractedgrapefruit juice) is dried and ground into a fine powder. 2)The grapefruit powder is dissolved in purified water and distilled toremove the fiber and pectin. 3)This distilled slurry is spray dried at low temperatures forming aconcentrated grapefruit bioflavonoid powder. 4)This concentrated powder is dissolved in vegetable glycerine and heated. 5)Food grade ammonium chloride and ascorbic acid are added, and thismixtures is heated under pressure. 6)This material undergoes catalytic conversion using naturalcatalysts(including hydrochloric acid and natural enzymes.). 7)This slurry is cooled, filtered and treated with ultraviolet light. Theamount of Ammonium Chloride remaining in the final product is between15-19%. The amount of Ascorbic Acid remaining in the final product isbetween 25 mg/g and 30mg/g. There is no residue of hydrochloric acid in thefinal product.
