As much as 70 percent of the foods on U.S. grocery

store shelves may contain ingredients derived from GMO

corn, soybeans, cottonseed, potatoes and other crops,

in

I think this is probably very accurate. I just read a article in Acres USA which is a eco-agriculture newsletter Aug 2000 that has figures just a bit lower- I added them after your post. GE PRODUCTS IN THE US FOOD SYSTEM DAIRY: Bovine Growth Hormone protein produced by cattle has been genetically engineered to produce a recombinant or GE version RBGH used to boost milk iit is in at least 30% of herds. Also a biotech enzyme chymosin a GE derived rennet substitute now is in 50% of cheese production. GRAINS - 30% of all grains or 27 million acres of corn- Mainly Bacillus thuringienis (Bt)strain corn- and Roundup ready corn.( withstands Monsanto's roundup) OILSEEDS- 40 million acres of GE soybeans and roundup ready rapeseed ( canola oil) COTTON- Bt, Roundup ready and other GE cotton accounted for more then half or 14 million acres planted. SUGAR- Roundup sugarbeets made their US debut in 1999 Potatoes- In 1998 GE and Monsanto New Leaf potatoes accounted for 60,000 acres out of 1.37 million acres planted with potatoes.Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com
