Dear all,

A recent study found lead in some calcium supplements (JAMA

9/20/2000)

Here are the suplements that showed traces of lead when tested:-

Calci-Mix manufactured by R & D labs

Liqui-Cal 600mg. manufactured by Advanced Nutritional Technology,

Calcium 600mg, manufactured by Eckerd Corp.

Caltrate 600, manufactured by Caltrate, Hi-Calcium, from oyster shell,

Eckerd Corp

Oscal 500mg., Manufactured by Oscal

Oyster shell Calcium, 500 with VitaminD, made by Nature Made,

Natural Oyster Shell Calcium, 500mg. with Vit d, manufactured by Spring

Valley Corp.

Although the amount of lead was in most cases small, the researchers

said that over time the lead couldhave adverse health effects, including

memory problems.

Just thought I would let you gals know- especially as many of us are

concerned about osteo.

It looks like the Superfood Recipe(Ian's Total Nutrition and my

Wholefood) is the best bet if you want to get your calcium...SAFELY

Here are the Hanna Kroegers Calcium Herbs (fromHeal your life with

Home remedies with herbs).

Caraway Seeds, chamomile, cleavers, Coltsfoot, Dandelion, dill,

Horsetail, Pimpernel, Tormentil root (and I would appreciate any

Herbalist who can give the latin names for some of these as I haven't

the foggiest what Pimpernel is - The Scarlet Pimpernel?/

<grin>)...........Love Penny(off to Apollo Beach to show her mother the

Mantees wintering in the warm waters of Tampa Bay)

the only plants named Pimpernel anywhere near me are quite small and

uncommon,

so if that is what is meant....I would not recommend....

instead I will copy and paste a list of plants (not necessarily edible,

medicinal or recommended, just the raw data) containing Calcium from Jim

Duke's Database. Note that Tomato leaf is first...but also toxic, second is

an Ephedra...too potent to take for calcium...in fact, a lot of these plants

or plant parts are toxic or nonedible...and I am not posting this list as

one containing the most useful or safe calcium sources,

but I find the list very interesting anyway, as it gives an idea of where

calcium is found in the plant world...Joanie
