Guest guest
I want to know if anyone can send me a picture of a whole Oak Gall? My brother-in-law thinks he might of found one.. I have never saw any and I really don't know how they look.. He said it is about 12 " wide, has a rippled top, all white bottom and is very hard. I hope this is the gall I'm looking for... Guest guest
Yikes, I have no idea what it is you are describing...but it sounds nothing like the oak galls we have here in New England, which look more like a big fat freckled but hollow green grape. One inch diameter... anyway, links to some pictures..the ones common here, in green stage, first, but look at them all....Joanie http://www.palacenet.net/home/mules/backyard4a.html http://www.biosurvey.ou.edu/okwild/misc/oakgall.html http://www.enterprise.k12.ca.us/chrysalis/Chrysalis/Oak_Gall_Key.html http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/forestry/publications/forestdi/july00/07200004.ht ml http://www.ento.okstate.edu/ddd/insects/hornedoakgall.htm >I want to know if anyone can send me a picture of a >whole Oak Gall? Thanks,Elaine Elaine, The oak gall that I'm looking for is used in Dr. Schulze tooth and gum formula.. He said it contains 2 to 4 more times the tannin than the oak bark... Thank You Sorcy, I have not heard it been said that the inside is beet red.. I will keep looking... Sharon
Guest guest
ok, this sounds like what i call " burls " ...people carve them into hard round salad bowls...Joanie ======= >Joanie, we have pictures of both in the files... what YOU have are oak >'apple' galls >They are made by the leaves. What we want/use, is made by the bark, and >looks just like it, but solid and hard and blood red inside....
Guest guest
I have taken pictures..somewhere they are... need to dump files, though, to make space to scan them in.... I have 100 acres of woods here...always finding neat stuff... I can think of 3 big ones I found this fall while collecting wreath greens... but perhaps the ones I think of are not the same when they are that big... I think these are more tree tumors than insect galls... the insect galls I sent links to *are* rich in tannic acid, though... at least the ones I have tasted....Joanie >======= >if you find one that big, I'll sell you golden gate for it <g> >They're usually tiny, about the size of a walnut, not much much bigger.... > >Sorcy (not wanting to imagine the invading bug for a gall that size)
