Guest guest
Spilanthes (Toothache Plant, Para Cress) Spilanthes acmella Family: Asteraceae Tropical perennial grown as an annual in temperate regions. Native to the tropics of the old and new world, it is my theory that Spilanthes was in existence before the continents divided, and was originally a single species. Striking golden bud-shaped flowers with deep red eyes on glossy green spreading plants. This plant is an easy-to-grow show-stopper. It can even be grown in pots indoors. Medicinally, the entire fresh plant, and especially the buddy flowers, are an indispensable immune-enhancing tonic which synergises effectively with Echinacea to increase the power of its activity when used during the beginning phases of infection, whether bacterial or viral. Our tests in the lab show that the plant contains high levels of alkalymides, similar to those found in Echinacea. Spilanthes is used as a prophylactic against malaria. It makes a stimulating and decay-fighting mouthwash, fights herpes sores and tonifies the gums. A surprisingly potent sialagogue. For more information, see my publication " Growing Tropical Plants... " Cultivation: Easy. Sow in greenhouse in early spring. The soil must be fairly warm (at least 70 degrees F) for efficient germination, and the seedlings are not frost hardy. Germinates in 8-12 days. Once the seedlings have developed true leaves, and as long as the last frost is past, they may be transplanted to garden or field. They like plenty of sun, good rich soil and plenty of water. Plant 2 feet apart. Grows 12 inches tall. Average fresh plant weighs 3 lbs. Return to Herb Seed Index Take good care.
