Sorcy, I can't be *real* helpful here, because it is still on my wish list, too, but I'm planning to grow goldenseal (Hydrastit canadensis) and American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) next year and I did a little research on them. I'm going to grow them together because they like the same " lifestyle " :-) The info I found said to prepare the bed in very early summer -- till it really deep and add lots of compost, dead leaves, etc. The soil has to be very rich in organic matter and well-drained for goldenseal and/or ginseng to do well. They both need shade (part or full) and will die in full sun. If you get roots, plant them in the fall after you've prepared the bed. I don't know about seeds -- the info I found was for roots, but I imagine you can plant seeds in either spring or fall, similar to other herbs with woodland habits. I'm really excited to grow these two, since they're so valuable as medicinals and so threatened in most wild habitats. I'll keep you posted on how the experiment goes . . . besides, I figure, if it grows in my back yard it will do better for me than stuff grown far away. Take care, Laura

I bought goldenseal seeds from Horizon Herbs a few years ago, they were sent moist in the fall and Richo Cech's instructions said to plant them right away in the fall. Some will come up in the spring and some will come up the next spring.....well maybe for him <g> I didn't get ANY to germinate. A friend also tried them the next year and they were not successful for her either. I hope you have better luck than we did! If I tried it again, I would plant them in pots instead of in the special raised bed under the oak trees that I made just for the goldenseal and ginseng. I would have better control of the conditions that way. I do have one goldenseal and one ginseng in that same bed that are growing slowly but at least they are growing. The roots take about 7 years to mature. I heard somewhere that you can use the leaves of either the goldenseal or ginseng and they are almost as powerful as the roots. Does anyone have any information on this? ......................Joan ************************* joanr My Country Garden http://mycountrygarden.net

Sorcy, just think if you did grow them from seed successfully...cheap way of getting plants and you could brag about it here and I would be envious <g>. I haven't given up on seeds yet....I think I will order goldenseal seeds soon (50 for $5.95 at Horizons - you can buy the seeds from August until April). Goldenseal and ginseng roots are easy to grow. Horizon Herbs sells the roots but only in the fall.............Joan ************************* joanr My Country Garden http://mycountrygarden.net
