Guest guest
Hey Colleen, You shouldn't get too significant here. As I said in an earlier post, we're not talking rocket science when it comes to making herbal preparations. The best Echinacea tincture is made from the roots which are tough and you need to use 100 proof (50%) alcohol. Fill your blender about 1/2 full with chopped up Echinacea root and cover it (about an inch) with your alcohol. Blend it fine and pour into your tincturing jar. Repeat until your jar is almost full leaving a little room to give it a good shaking. When it all settles after a couple of hours of just sitting there, you should have at least 3/4 of your jar filled with plant matter. Don't stint on your herbs. All the chemicals that are in the plant are now in your tincture. Stint on the herbs and you stint on the amount of vital chemicals in your tincture. An herbal preparation is only as valuable as the amount of chemicals used. The MORE the BETTER. Hope this helps. Guest guest
I make all mine with vinegar...I believe you can also make one more suited for children or for those who are picky about the taste with something I just can't remember...It is supposed to be sweet. I take my herbs and place them into boiling vinegar for just a few minutes then place in a mason jar-like container for a month. Strain and then place in amber bottles. I am sure you already know this, but keep it out of direct light or excessive heat during the month and for storage. The amount of time needed may vary from formula to formula but this is just a general all purpose type of recipe. -Vicki blnk778 [blnk778] Tuesday, August 22, 2000 9:31 PM herbal remedies [herbal remedies] tinctures Hi! I'm new to this group , but i can tell i'm going to fit in quite nicely , you're all a hoot! Anyway i was wondering if anyone knows of a way to make a tincture without using alcohol. I remember hearing something about using cider vinegar instead, but i'm not sure. This is very important as i cannot use anything that contains alcohol because of religous reasons.Looking forward to a great herbal relationship with everyone.. Guest guest
Hi Nijma, Welcome to the list. You can use Organic Apple Cider Vinegar or Glycerin in some cases, however some harder materials need a heavier duty menstrum like 100 Proof alcohol or stronger. Most roots respond only to 50% alcohol or stronger though you might find exceptions with a softer root. A good solution is to make your tincture using alcohol and then when using the tincture, place a couple of dropperfuls into a cup and then pour in some hot tea which causes the alcohol to evaporate off. Hope this helps. Best regards, Ian Dr. Ian ShillingtonDoctor of Naturopathyian_shillington - blnk778 herbal remedies Tuesday, August 22, 2000 9:30 PM [herbal remedies] tinctures Hi!
