Dear Herbalists,

Many of you are nowhere near this stage of a woman's life. But, I

felt this should be known. There are many Herbs that can help a woman

pass NATURALLY through what is a NATURAL stage in a woman's life.

The Medical Profession are determined to turn Menopause into a

Disease and now they are trying to turn it into a Mental Illness that

gets women hooked on drugs...

Here is some information that may be useful to have somewhere to

give any woman who comes to you with requests to help her through this

stage of her

life........................................................Best Wishes

Penny

DA Approves Prozac for Severe PMS

>

> To be sold under a different name -- Sarafem

>

> By Adam Marcus

> HealthSCOUT Reporter

>

> FRIDAY, July 7 (HealthSCOUT) -- Women who suffer strong

emotional

> and physical premenstrual symptoms can now officially get

relief from a

> familiar source: the antidepressant Prozac.

>

> Government regulators have approved fluoxetine

hydrochloride, otherwise

> known as Prozac, for the treatment of premenstrual

dysphoric disorder,

> or

> PMDD. The drug, made by Eli Lilly, will be sold under the

name Sarafem.

>

> Between 3 percent and 5 percent of menstruating women

develop PMDD,

> experts say. The

> condition leads to severe mood swings before monthly

periods, as well as

> physical symptoms such

> as bloating and tender breasts. Unlike premenstrual

syndrome (PMS), PMDD

> is profound enough

> to disrupt social relationships.

>

> Doctors have long prescribed Prozac and similar

antidepressants, such as

> Zoloft, as " off-label "

> treatments for women with PMDD. But the FDA's action makes

Sarafem the

> first drug approved

> specifically for the condition.

>

> Clinical tests showed that fluoxetine was better than sham

treatment in

> women with PMDD at

> controlling mood changes and physical symptoms. Studies

also found that

> fluoxetine helped prevent

> the disruption of social relationships which often occurs

in women with

> the condition. Patients who

> took the drug reported some mild side effects, including

nausea,

> fatigue, anxiety, dizziness and

> trouble concentrating.

>

> New name a less bitter pill

>

> Larua Miller, a spokeswoman for Eli Lilly, says the

company chose a new

> trademark for the

> menstrual drug because market research showed that women

would be more

> willing to take it under

> a name different from Prozac, which they associate with

depression.

>

> Viren Mehta, a drug industry analyst at Mehta Partners,

says the

> renaming offers Lilly the

> advantages of a distinct brand and extended patent

protection for

> fluoxetine. Prozac's patent expires

> in 2003.

>

> Sarafem will be available in August, at a wholesale cost

of about $2.20

> per capsule, the same as

> Prozac. The recommended dose is 20 milligrams per day,

also the same as

> what Prozac users

> initially take. Although the FDA approval covers daily use

of the drug,

> Lilly is investigating whether

> intermittent doses are also safe and effective, Miller

says.

> What To Do

>

> Ellen Miller, a PMDD expert at the University of

Pennsylvania School of

> Medicine in Philadelphia,

> says women don't have to take drugs to help relieve

symptoms of the

> disorder. Diet changes,

> counseling and psychotherapy may work for some patients,

as may

> vitamins, herbal supplements

> and exercise. " All kinds of things can be tried, " Freeman

says.
