Robert,

The most important consideration I have found is to progressively improve your diet as you are approaching a fast. If you will slowly improve your diet and sort of gently cleanse your way toward the fast, the actual transition into the fast will be much easier and smoother for having done so. I have found this to be so true, so may times.

The second most important consideration is to keep my bowels moving, particularly for the first several days of the fast. I use Smooth Move herb tea, Epsom salts, enemas and sometimes a colonic at the beginning of a fast and then again at the end. I have also found that the poorer my diet has been previous to a fast the more important this cleansing of the colon will be in the early days of the fast.

My best pre-fast diet is fruits, vegetables, grains, fish, occasional chicken. No dairy, no wheat and no fried foods...

Best, Tim

ps, Keep us posted how you do Robert!pss, "Fasting and Eating for Health" by Joel Fuhrman, MD is an excellent book on fasting and is in most all the bookstores now, or they can order it.

In this book he really emphasizes the importance of eating right before you start a fast and how much easier this makes the whole thing.Robert Ratliff <bratliff wrote:

I am wondering what is a good 'starter' fast? I've read so many opinions about fasting, how to do it and for how long, I'm a bit confused. What is a good fast for just cleaning out completely? or can this really be done?

thanks for any help,

Susan

Susan,

I have fasted several times - I used to fast three days per month, every month, then life got in the way and I got out of the habit. When I did, I looked and felt fabulous and did not carry any extra weight, and I didn't have cravings for junk that would run away with me like I have now. (I need to get back on the program)

Anyway, I started out with a 3 day juice fast - to get started, you need to cut out meats and dairy, then, the next day or so, cut out grains and pastas and potatoes, then the next day cut out your veggies. At this point I start taking colon cleansing capsules (from the health food store) and I drink nothing but fruit juice (fruit is cleansing, veggies are building). So any kind of organic fruit juice (I cut mine with some water), any time you want, all day for at least 3 days. The first day is usually ok, but the second day for me is always the headache day if I'd consumed a lot of sugar and caffine. The third day is much easier and sometime I would extend it to 5 days, continuing to take the cleansing capsules each day.

When you are ready to get back on food, just start with solid fruit (not bananas), then the next 3 days, just fuit and raw veggies, maybe some steamed.

Oh, and of course during the fast if you just want water, by all means drink it.

That's how I do it. You will have to adjust for your own compfort.

There is a really good book on fasting by Edmond Bordeaux Szekely

entitled 'The Essene Science of Fasting and the Art of Sobriety'.

Start off by eating only raw foods for at least a month before going on

a fast. Then two days before you start only eat raw juicy fruits. The

first two days of the fast you will feel hungry, but after that a

coating forms on the tongue and your appetite is suppressed. Try to

keep it going until your tongue looses the coating and your appetite

returns (usually after 7 days). When you come off the fast, you have

to introduce food very slowly. Juice up some vegetables and sip on

them by the spoonful for around 2 days and then go back on the organic

raw fruit and vegetable diet for at least a few weeks. Your body will

be rebuilding itself, so it is important that you give it the best

possible building blocks. Oh and remember to go out and get some sun

and fresh air while your fasting as well as taking lots of showers to

clean the skin. It will help it go much faster. I wouldn't put too

much stress on your body during this, so it's really advisable to take

some time off work for this one. During a heavy detoxification

process, toxins are dumped into your bloodstream and when they pass by

nerve groups there can be some dizziness and fatigue. The organic raw

food diet will help detoxify your body to an extent and it is

imperative that you don't skip this step especially if you feel you are

very toxic.

I'm not sure if this is what you meant by a 'starter fast', but it's

the first thing that crossed my mind. If you don't want to experience

the detox effects of a traditional fast, the Doc has a Total Body

Cleanse Program in the files section.

I have not done this one myself, but I have heard of people that have

gone through programs like the one he has and they feel great

afterwards. From what I hear, they pass some of the grossest stuff

from their bodies. It's unreal.

But, don't take my word for it. Nothing replaces research and

knowledge and if possible find people who have done it and ask them

about their experiences. Always remember, you are the best judge of

your body.
