Guest guest
If one is convinced a changing room has spy mirror installed, one can always smash the mirror, make a big fuss & demand that the police be called. Much more effective than simply leaving the establishment to continue spying on other customers. Guest guest
My main teacher, Dr.Li and my first clinical preceptor, David Frierman, have completed the first draft of their book on renal diseases. Dr. Li,in addition to her lifelong training in TCM and the classics, is also a medical doctor who was chief of renal pathology at her provincial hospital for many years. Dr. Li realized early on in her medical practice that her background in TCM was infinitely valuable in the treatment of kidney disease. Many patients did not have access to dialysis in the early days of her practice and even now in the west, the treatment of kidney disease remains rather extreme and not very effective longterm (basically dialysis or transplant). Some chinese herbs appear to regenerate kidney cells in vitro and improve symptoms in vivo. David, a longtime practitioner of martial arts and an acupuncturist for over 15 years, was one of the first teachers I had to put strong emphasis on TCM and raw herbs. While I only worked with him early in my training, he has always impressed me with his dedication and scholarship. He has devoted his entire professional career to delivering TCM to low income patients. This book will be a welcome addition to the TCM literature. Bravo David and Li Wei; please pass my message to Dr. Li. OCOM is beginning to distinguish itself as a source of textbook writers with Guohui Liu last year and now you guys. > " David Frierman " <davidfrierman > > Dear Friends, > Sitting at Outside In printing Dr. Li and my book to send to Blue Poppy. > So glad to be done with it (at least the first draft.) Guest guest
The outline looks fabulous. I will look forward to seeing it in print. I wonder if they used one Chinese text on kidney diseases, " Shi yong zhong yi shen bing xue " as a source text. That is one that Miki Shima recommended to me. Guest guest
A degree in a growing field: organic farming studies at UFwww.MiamiHerald.com | 09/02/2006 |A degree in a growing field: organic farming studies at UFUniversity of Florida students can now major in organic agriculture, apioneering program at the Gainesville-based school.BY NOAH BIERMANnbierman The University of Florida is pioneering a program this semester to letstudents in on the hottest trend in food -- organic farming.UF is among three universities in the country offering an organicagriculture degree for the first time this year. The new programs come asretail giant Wal-Mart begins selling mass quantities of the organic food, which is free of pesticides and chemical fertilizer.''Quite frankly, there just are not enough organic farmers out there thathave the technical skills to meet the demand,'' said Ryan Zinn, nationalcampaign coordinator for the Organic Consumers Organization, whichadvocates for legal changes to promote the industry. ``The changingconsumer preferences toward organic, and really a localized food system,is not a flash in the pan.''Colorado State University and Washington State University are the othertwo schools initiating new programs. UF has offered a minor in organicfarming for a year and a popular organic gardening elective course sincethe early 1990s, said Dan Cantliffe, chairman of UF's horticulturalsciences department.''We had more and more interest from students, as well as more and morerequests from organic businesses in and out of the state of Florida,''Cantliffe said. The minor has attracted 12 to 15 students. Three students have signed upfor the major so far -- a trickle in the 4,000-student agriculturalschool. But the numbers could grow quickly. More Americans than ever are willingto spend a few extra dollars on a carton of milk or a batch ofstrawberries if they believe the food is healthier. The industry represents about 2 to 3 percent of all food and beveragesales. But sales have grown more than 20 percent a year since 1990, from$1 billion in 1990 to $13.8 billion in 2005, according to the OrganicTrade Association. Small farmers have been boosted by the growth becauseit's one of the few areas where they can earn a premium.''If I want to stay in this area as a [small] farmer, I've got tochange,'' said Arturo Gonzalez, who is converting the 10 acres he owns inHomestead into a mix of organic fruits, herbs and vegetables.Gonzalez said he farmed organic -- though he didn't call it that -- whenhe worked with his father in Cuba. When he came to Miami in 1970, hecouldn't grow a pest-free crop without chemicals and switched toconventional farming. He made plans to switch back after the federalgovernment initiated organic standards in 2002 and he became convinced itwas a growth area.He said he is thrilled to see UF training a new generation in naturalfarming methods. ``That's the fastest growing segment in agriculture.''Cantliffe believes organic farming will remain a niche -- albeit asignificant one -- in the agricultural market because chemicals helpconventional farmers produce larger, better quality crops than organicfarmers can grow without the aid of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.''There's too many people on the planet and there's no way that you'regoing to feed them by converting everything to organic,'' he said."Get off your ass and take your government back." ~Rocky Ward Want to be your own boss? Pointing out that President Harry S. Truman infamously derided the1947-1948 Congress as the "Do-Nothing Congress" for meeting for only 108days, Kenny ponders what Truman would have thought of our modern-dayCongress, which is projected to spend only 79 days in session in 2006."While most Americans returned from their holiday vacation in the first weekof January, the House took nearly the entire month off, commencing thesession on January 31st," says Kenny. "In February, the House met for only47 hours, an average work week for many Americans." As the 2006 electionseason heats up, the Organic Consumers Fund needs your help to build a newCongress that will work hard to bring issues of environmental sustainabilityand human health to the forefront of American politics. OCA, following a legalinitiative spearheaded by Gardens of Eagan and supported by other organicfarms in Minnesota, alerted our Minnesota network about the state's plan toallow the construction of an oil pipeline that would have cut across severalorganic farms, thereby undermining or destroying the farms' hard-foughtorganic certification. Thanks to the Minnesota organic community and thewillingness of the Minnesota Pipeline Company to respect organic farms, anew legal precedent has been established in the state that essentiallyprovides special protections to organic farms (given the expensive anddifficult process of acquiring organic certification). According to RonnieCummins, National Director of the Organic Consumers Association, "Part ofthe reason for taking this legal action was not only to prevent thispipeline from disrupting several organic farms in Minnesota but also to seta legal precedent for any other organic farms in the state, or anywhere inthe United States."Learn more: http://www.organicconsumers.org/2006/article_1972.cfmWe rely on your donations to continue our work on these important issues!Donate Now!http://www.organicconsumers.org/donations.htm_BOOK OF THE WEEK: THE GREAT BIRD FLU HOAXA new book by renowned physician and dietary expert Dr. Joseph Mercola seeksto expose what he calls a "U.S. government hoax" regarding avian flu. "This is real money that farmersare losing," said Arkansas Rice Growers Association Executive Director GregYielding, who said he has fielded dozens of calls from frantic rice farmers."It is a big deal.
