I've been knitting a blue and yellow blanket for my son. When I am done I am going to empower it with Reiki. Fingers crossed it will be done soon! I'm also working on getting my supplies together to make lavender bath salts for Yule presents.

Hello,

My name is Kathy and I am new to the group. I am a 43 year old wife and homeschooling mother who lives in Lexington, Ky. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia a little over 8 years ago and ended up having to quit my job as a Registered Nurse five years ago last Labor Day. Being a nurse, of course I first went to my general practitioner and then to the rheumatologist with my symptoms (which took me a long time to accept that it was fibromyalgia, and still I wonder...)

It took me awhile to realize the medical community could not help me. Not only could they not help me, they couldn't even tell me what was definitively wrong. They finally did settle on fibromyalgia, but I have had lots of symptoms that just do not fit. Like why in the world did I have severe spinal stenosis at the age of 39? But that's beside the point.

Presently I am off all meds except blood pressure and thyroid meds. I have made it my goal not to eat anything I can't pronounce, not that I'm always successful. At any rate, my symptoms are now wholly controlled through diet, diet supplements, and lifestyle. I have been symptom-free from fibromyalgia for about four months, and my spinal stenosis is much improved and only acts up when I really push it.

I am looking forward to getting to know you all and learning more about natural healing.

Blessings,

Kathy

Hi Kathy,

Im glad you've had so much success with diet. I have also found that that is usually what it is. At least for me. I, too stuggle with sticking with it. I have epilepsy, thyroid disease, adrenal fatigue and celiac disease. I do pretty good sticking with the gluten free diet. But I dont always eat healthy. But, I keep working on it!

I also had a lot of trouble with doctors...I think that's why most of us end up here! I was told also, that I had fibromyalgia. But in my case it ended up being the tyroid disease. Once I found a doctor who would put me on armour and give me enough of it, I was much better!

Now, Im also in menopause and that is trying my patience! The hot flashes are unbearable! But I have a holistic doctor who is working with me on this. Im on bhrt, but it stopped working this summer???!!!! So we'll keep plugging away at it!

Welcome to the group and good luck in your health endeavors!

Hi Carla,

If you don't mind me asking, how high did you have to lower your TSH for the symptoms to lessen? I have read alot about the connection between thyroid disease and fibromyalgia symptoms and have often wondered. At one point, I had my doctor change my meds from Synthroid to Cytomel, but ended up changing back because the Cytomel was so expensive. I vaguely recall hearing about Armour. Is that a natural thyroid replacement?

I think I have started menopause, too... lol. Have started having a few hot flashes. I am 43, so I guess it's time... Have you figured out any natural remedies for that yet? I've been thinking I'd better start looking into it.

Thanks & Blessings,

Kathy

Hi! Glad to see you are all posting messages.

Kathy, could you share what worked with your diet and improvement of your illnesses? Many people find improvement by eliminating both foods that they are allergic to and that feed candida. And upping the foods that alkalize your body as in the Gerson therapy.

Carla, did you say you had improved your epilepsy? I have a friend who's son is an epileptic. We are looking at diets to help his son including the one on Debbie's website at www.naturallythriving.com It's an anticandida diet, lots of meat and veggies.

Aimee, I think the cure to skin ailments which are most likely immune-related is the same for other illnesses, go as natural and unprocessed as possible, find out your major allergens (mine are wheat, milk, tomatoes, and vinegar), and slow down on sugar and simple carbs. Allergies are not just sneezes and itchy eyes, allergies are skin conditions, bowel conditions, psychiatric conditions, arthritis... your immune system is everywhere.

Kelly,

I do have allergies. Started out with seasonal allergies all my

life and then about 5 years ago became year round. When I worked at the

scrapbook store I was miserable. Certain papers and dyes set me off and my eyes

water so badly people think I am crying. I quit in August and since September

my eyes haven’t watered. I am on Zyrtec year round and was on Nasonex but took

myself off it.

I have a touchy tummy as well, but started taking probiotics

about 2 weeks ago and have seen a difference.

Congrats on being mostly med-free. That's my goal as well. :)

Hi Kelly,

We did eliminate foods, but mostly those that contain a bunch of chemicals/toxins.... especially convenience & fast foods. We try not to eat anything we can't pronounce (but of course, that's next to impossible. We just make that our ultimate goal). We have also gotten rid of sodas, refined sugar, refined flour, & hexane-extracted oils. In addition, I have noticed that I feel better if I eliminate meat from my diet. Again... not something we always do, but I feel better when I do. I try to at least have two meatless meals a day and only a small bit of meat, if any, with the third. We try not to drink fluoridated water or use fluoridated toothpaste since that's been linked to fibromyalgia, and we've worked on eliminating chemicals from our home and personal care products since the skin is so absorptive and I've read that if you put it on your skin you might as well eat it. As a rule, we try to buy organic as much as we can afford.

We have worked on adding different kinds of whole grains to our diet besides just wheat, and as many fresh, raw fruits & veggies as possible. I don't tend to do well with getting those, though, so we added a fruit and vegetable drink mix that is made from whole foods and provides all the antioxidants and phytonutrients of a day's supply of fruits and vegetables. We love coconut oil (organic, cold-pressed, of course;)) and try to add it into anything we can. I love it in granola. I've heard great things about raw milk and would love to add it to our diet in the future. You can't buy it in Kentucky, but I have learned of a farm where you can buy cow shares and hire the farmer to care for your cow for you, so that might be a possibility.

We have made it a policy to look for herbal or natural cures first before we go for medications. I use white willow bark for minor aches and pains, stinging nettles for my seasonal allergies, chamomile or valerian when I can't sleep... you get the picture. We also try to eat lots of yogurt and take probiotics to help build our immunity.

Of course all this is on a perfect day. We fail alot, but if we are only successful part of the time, it makes a big difference in my body.

Blessings,

Kathy

Hi Kathy,Coincidentally, my daughter was just tested as having high TSH with accompanying symptoms of heart palpitations and low weight. I researched a lot and found that 2 herbs were effective in lowering TSH: lemonbalm and bugleweed. ALso, progesterone is said to normalize the thyroid. As she has always been imbalanced hormonally, I had her go on some liposomal progesterone. As you are starting to have some perimenopausal symptoms, this might be something for you to try as well. I am also 43 and becoming peri-menopausal. I started on the progesterone and have been much improved- both mentally and physically. All the Best, SusanOn Nov 24, 2009, at 9:49 AM, Kathy wrote:Hi Carla,If you don't mind me asking, how high did you have to lower your TSH for the symptoms to lessen? Thank you for sharing Kathy! I would love to go meatless all the time, but I feel like I would be tired. However, if I learned to do the vegetarian thing right, perhaps I wouldn't. Those greens have a lot of iron! Kel

Hi Kathy and everyone!

I dont know the numbers (TSH) I use to keep track of it quite a few years ago, but anymore I just go by how I feel. Armour Is a natural dessicated animal hormone. Its been in use for about 100 years. And to my understanding was the main thyroid medication until synthroid was made available. I was on synthroid in the beginning and it did absolutely nothing for me! I fought with a lot of doctors and changed docs many times. At one time I traveled to greenville, pa, about an hour and a half to a integrative medicine doc who was absolutely great! However, the trip got to be too much, especially in the winter, and its hard on me because I work 3rd shift. He was also the doc that diagnosed mine and my daughters celiac disease. About 3 yrs ago I found a doc in erie who is an osteopathic doc but also is certified in holistic medicine. I would prefer Dr. Kerry in greenville, but Dr. B is pretty good. And he understands thyroid issues more than any other doc i've gone to in erie. For the most part he only prescribes Armour for hypothyroidism. In the past months Armour has been impossible to get. I had to go a couple of weeks without it and was having some pain and fatigue (more than usual), but luckily, Dr. B works with a compounding pharmacist who made it for me. My 3 children (son-29 and daughters-24 and 18) also have thyroid issues. My oldest daughter couldn't get pregnant. A conventional doc had her on synthroid--it didn't do anything for her either. Dr. B put her on Armour and she got pregnant in 3 months!

At one time I thought that fibromyalgia was undiagnosed or mistreated hashimoto's (autoimmune thyroid) disease. But, Ive seen some articles that say this isnt the case. Im no expert, I only know from my personal experience I had a lot of fibromyalgic-like pain that goes away when on the proper armour dosage.

Going on a gluten free diet also helped me a lot. I had a lot of stomach and constipation issues. This went on for years and was getting worse daily. The only time I didn't have stomach pain was in the morm. before I ate anything. I had gone to a ton of drs, but all I heard was that I had IBS. 3 days on the gluten free diet cured my stomach issues. Celiac disease is associated with thyroid disease. It seems alternative or natural drs believe it causes or is one of the causes of thyroid disease (among a host of other things). Dr. Kerry believes this and tho my tests came out negative he encouraged me to go on the gluten free diet. He hopes that my children's thyroid issues wont get as bad as mine if they stay on the gf diet!

I also try to eat healty. My youngest daughter is a vegetarian, and I was starting to do it with her. But, it made me pretty tired. Dr. B told me I wasn't getting enough protein and had me start on protein shakes. That helped quite a bit. Now, I eat a large salad 2x a day with a p shake, then eat some protein with my evening meal.

I also believe that the gluten is a cause of epilepsy. If only I had been diagnosed decades ago! I did get off seizure meds for two years before having a seizure. Prior to the gf diet, I would have one within a few weeks without meds. But, I did have another seizure and went back on meds (trileptal) because I need to drive. I would really like to get off them though. Ironically, I have a dog who also cant tolerrate gluten. He has severe arthritic pain if he eats any gluten. Since being gf his skin and coat looks great and he has lost weight. He acts like a puppy again and he's 14 years old! He doesn't have epilepsy, but gluten is a known cause of epilepsy in dogs.

Sorry, I didn't mean to go on so long!!!! Just one more thing--I recently read a really good book that seemed as though it was written for me! It deals with most of the issues I deal with. Thyroid disease along with a host of other hormone issues. Anyone showing beginning signs of perimenopause, in menopause or those who've had a hysterecftomy (as I did) should read it. The Body Sense Natural Diet by Lorna R Vanderhaeghe. She tells you exactly what to do and what natural ways to help with all female hormone issues. It has become my bible! It is so worth the money! My local wegman's carries all the natural supplements she suggests and they are very reasonalby priced.

Again, sorry this is so long, It hard to put into words the 30 + year struggle I've been through!

I hope this is of some help, and let me know if anyone reads, or has read lorna's book!

Peace,

Carla

Hi Susan

Lately I've been having palpitations as well, though ZERO problems with low weight... lol. I will check out the lemonbalm and bugleweed. My hypothyroid is something I've never been able to find much information on as far as herbal remedies are concerned. Also recently started checking into stuff for menopause since I think it's headed my way soon, but haven't gotten far. Thanks for the information!

Blessings,

Kathy

Carla.. you didn't go on too long! Thanks so much for all the great information. Isn't it amazing how all this is possibly/probably interlinked and most of the medical profession just doesn't seem to get it? I think they've been programmed for too long just to look at the symptoms and treat them, rather than looking at the whole person and trying to figure out what's really going on.

I am VERY interested in Armour. Will definitely have to check that out when I get back in town (from Thanksgiving with the folks in Tennessee). Also plan to check out the book. My sister has had a total hysterectomy and she is only in her thirties. I will recommend it to her, too. I really want to manage menopause naturally if at all possible.

Again.. thanks for taking the time to tell me about all of this!

Blessings,

Kathy
