Guest guest
I was a first mate for 18 months. Seasickness can be managed. 1. Don't drink any alcohol the night before your day at sea. 2. Eat healthy not greasy foods the night before. 3. If you feel like you are getting nauseous - take a zip lock bag full of ice and place it on your breadbasket (stomach) it will slow down the stomach juices and often prevent gerbing. 4. Focus on a fixed object. Like a cloud - or land mass (if you have land hoe) take deep breaths while staying focused. 5. Do NOT offer to clean fish 6. Do NOT go below (if the vessel) has quarters. 7. Dramamine makes a Non- drowsy formula. 8. There are pressure point wrist bands available at most marine stores. These bands put a pressure point of your wrist which helps prevent blood flow to the sea sick spot in your brain. I am not a moderator - but I hope I have been of some help. Guest guest
Dear Marilyn, One doesn't need to be a Moderator to help. We all have that ability if we wish to exercise it. In addition to what you wrote below, I'd also like to add that one can get rid of seasickness or motion sickness in general by "contributing" to the motion. The reason people get motion sickness at all is because they are trying to "Stop" the motion. This is why your old time sailor walked with a swinging swagger. You want to contribute to the motion rather than try stopping it. Hope this helps. Guest guest
There are several things that can be done prior to a boating trip as well as during to prevent and minimize the effects of the motion of the boat. The object is to get the parasympathetic nervous system into action and to " trick " the brain and senses with some specific actions. Before the trip: •Drink plenty of water to hydrate the body prior to departure. •Eat lightly prior to departure. •Consumption of ginger prior to departure helps some people. During the journey: •Find a location on the boat most often in the center of the boat on deck with fresh air where there is minimal effect of the waves and motion. •Face forward in the boat, gazing at the horizon, but do not lock onto the visual. •Steer the boat. It helps to focus on the horizon, keeps your mind occupied •Listen to music. •Take deep slow breaths. •Accupressure to the anti-nausea point on the inside of your wrist can help.
