Hi everyone, My mother-In-Law asked if I knew of anything natural to

help her. We think it is just stress but I would be willing to take

any other idea's anyone has. She is currently experiancing feelings

like her stomach is tied in knots, and sometime it hurts. A little bit

about why we think it is stress. 2 Weeks ago her oldest daughter was

killed in a auto accident. She is consitantly thinking about it. She

has been talking about going to speak with the pastor of our church

about it for help. But in the mean time her stomach has been tied in

knots and upset since she found out her daughter was killed. Does

anyone know of any herb or anything that might help her stomach relax?

I read a past post about Breathing to reduce stress and I thought I

would pass that along to her as well.

The family could also use all the prayers they can get to help through

this hard time.

Thank you very much, Ben

I am so sorry to her that. I just could not imagine. Have her try drinking alot of water, that is suppose to help calm a person down.

Oh, that is awful. I am so sorry about her daughter.

Yes it sounds like stress. To get some magnesium into

her would relax the muscles. Epsom's salts can be

taken orally (magnesium sulphate) but it does cause

diarrhea if you take too much. There is also kava

kava, St. john's wort teas, Valerian root (I have NOT

taken these so can't vouch for them). Also flax oil

helps me. I put it in yoghurt and eat it mixed with

walnuts. It relaxes my whole digestive tract and my

muscles in general. Potassium is very important too.

She is losing vitamins and minerals quickly due to

stress. In this country though, they give you an

antidepressant. And I admit, it does work. So much

that when I try to get off of it (zoloft) my stomach

tightens up just like hers. It has even shut down

twice in my life, apparent on xrays. Then when I took

zoloft and calmed more it started working again. I

wish I had the knowledge of better options for natural

stress relief myself. Wish I could help more. I hope

that she doesn't have to get on an antidepressant or a

benzodiazipine (like xanax). They are hard to get off

of. Take care, Kel

Good ideas, Kel. Something else to try is meditation, yoga, Tai-Chi, and other forms of exercise. I find these are great for relaxing. Also, your favorite type of music!

Thank you all sooooo much, I will pass this info on to her and I am sure these ideas will help. I would hate to see her have to take some kind of a drug to help, because I know they ussually do more harm than good, and the good thing is she realizes that too that was why she asked me for a natural way.

Thanks again, Ben

Hi Ben, I can't imagine anything more painful than losing one of your children, at any age. I just attended a funeral last week of a 12 inch long, 3 pound, 16 day old baby girl. I know alot about stress, anxiety and depression, having suffered for 2 1/2 years after my cancer with these things. The symptoms you describe sound like anxiety.

One of my supplements, Biomega, does wonders for the stomach symptoms. People use it for ulcers. I think your mother-in-law probably should talk to her family minister. She should also get psychotherapy (counseling, grief counseling) and maybe something to help with the anxiety/stress. It is one thing to treat the symptoms. But getting to the underlying cause of the symptoms is what is really most important here. And sometimes, short term medication may be the best answer, especially with this kind of trauma.

If she prefers not to use medications for anxiety, I recommend kava kava, valerian root and an increase in all B vitamins, especially B12. These can all be taken together, although she probably won't need both the kava kava and valerian at the same time. She may want to use kava kava during the day and valerian root at night before bed.

Breathing for relaxation and destressing works wonders. I also used chakra meditation and yoga to help relieve my anxiety and depression. There are good books with instruction on how to do both of these. The two I started with are a very good place to start. They are, "Meditation - Path to the Deepest Self" by Michal Levin and "The American Yoga Association's Beginner's Manual" by Alice Christensen. A couple other good books I have are "The Anxiety Book - Developing Strength in the Face of Fear" by Jonathon Davidson, M.D. and "Protect Us From All Anxiety - Meditations for the Depressed" by William Burke.

The Yoga was hard to get started because the depression left me paralyzed, literally, alot of the time, with absolutely no energy the rest of the time. But doing a little bit at a time, I eventually was able to get back into it. I initially started doing yoga for the oxygenation benefits for my cancer, before chemo left me with no energy and radiation left me unable to do almost anything!

This is a tragedy that your mother-in-law will be dealing with for the rest of her life. The best thing she can do is start learning coping skills. This kind of pain never goes away. One just learns to live with it and tolerate it and most of the time still manages to go on living their own life in spite of it. I will absolutely keep your mother-in-law and her whole family in my prayers.

Blessings, Renee
