bypass surgery (CABS) has fallensteadily over recent years. Concern remains, however, about theeffect of this surgery on the brain. The problem of brain damage after CABS is multifactorial, involvingmicroembolism, disturbed perfusion, metabolic derangement, andinflammatory responses.Microemboli numbers have been linked to the likelihood ofneuropsychological deterioration after surgery.Risk factors for cerebral changes after CABS include older age, gender, neurological disease, diabetes, and calcification of theaorta. These risk factors are important because, in comparison with theearly 1990s, patients undergoing CABS are now older and tend to havea greater number of comorbid conditions.Changes in surgical technique, such as the introduction of arterial-line filters and membrane oxygenators, have led to a reduction ofboth microemboli and neuropsychological disturbance. However, theproblem persists,

prompting further studies on surgical techniqueand neuroprotective strategies.Publication Types:ReviewReview, TutorialPMID: 12849516 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]_________________JoAnn GuestmrsjoguestDietaryTipsForHBP www.geocities.com/mrsjoguest/Genes Please pass this message or article on to someone else so that they may learn also.Community Newsletters.http://www.alternative-medicine-newsletter.infoCommunity Message Boards.http://www.alternative-medicine-message-boards.info"Do not let either the medical authorities or the politicians mislead you.
