I have written a list of pros and cons, although it is hard to list emotions. I feel it could be a wonderful friend to me. I am very confused. Cons It is hard work. It might get sick and die and family would be devastated. Money loss. Pros Friend to me. Watchdog. Rescue the dog. I am so confused. Guest guest Posted August 11, 2004 Report Share Posted August 11, 2004 I rescued all my pets, 4 cats, to many dogs to remember. I have had some that were to sick to make it, and yes I cried. I had a shephard-collie mix named wolf. He lived to be 14 and I had to have him put to rest, he had hip displasa and his back end just wasted away. I held him in my arms as he went. I dont regret having him in my life. I could'nt imagine not having any of my cats, except Chico, I don't like him. Jen does. I rescued Sassy, a beagle, because she was afraid of noise. She would have been shot. They are bred to hunt. I have lost many of my babies over the years, i regret none. At least theey saw what it was like to be loved. As for health, pets help ill people feel better. If I didn't have sassy I probably would never leave my room. And when I am sad my baby Milo, 12 year old cat cuddles me. Owning a pet is a something you will have to decide. One thing, check and she if she is spayed. As for me they are so good to and for me. They make me laugh so much sometimes, till I cry. Guest guest Posted August 11, 2004 Report Share Posted August 11, 2004 We adopted a Siberian Husky that our neighbors left behind with no food when they moved nearly two years ago. He is about 60-65# and has a double coat which is their insulation from the cold. They are snow dogs. He is wonderful company. He knows when I do not feel good and will hardly leave the room. He can be a little beggar but we love him to pieces. Would not trade him for all the tea in china. He had been abused and was not allowed to bark so I had to teach him. He is still touchy in a few places but we work with him and he knows he is loved. I can tell you that I am not sure if I would have gotten through this last year as well without him. I would have had to be alone a lot. Although he loves his time outside, he senses when I need him inside and will stay close by. A wonderful companion. Yes, he may die, he is 7 yrs old. But, the pros outweigh the cons by a whole big bunch in my book. Now that I have written you a book, lol, I will let you consider all that others say as well. Oh, our Nikko loves table food so his dog food lasts longer and our scraps get eat up. He eats watermelon, pineapple, plums, peaches, apples, bananas, baked potatoes including the skin and much much more. They are wonderful companions. Just like anything, it can get sick but that's all part of life. Nothing is ever guaranteed. Good luck with your decision making. Just make sure that whatever breed you choose that you do your homework as far as it's personality goes. Visit the American Kennel Association (http://www.akc.org/breeds/recbreeds/breeds_a.cfm) they will give you information on dog breeds. Do a search over the internet - I came across it once - where there was a list of questions for the potential dog owner's wants and habbits and it will give you a list of dogs that is best suited for you and your environment. Guest guest Posted August 12, 2004 Report Share Posted August 12, 2004 I was wondering about that too. 20 times a day seems very excessive. That is more than once an hour while you are awake. My pup goes out about 5 times a day and some of those are just for the fresh air and the running around in the yard. When I don't feel good and can't manage the walk or playing outside with him, we play Fetch on the stairs. I sit down at the top of the stairs and throw the ball down, he chases it and brings it back. He gets lots of exercise that way! Hugs, Jacy ~I don't approve of political jokes. I not saying that her dog doesn’t need to go out that often. Nikko will not go out at all if it is raining or too hot. He stays out a lot when it is really cold. Just check with a vet to find the needs for the dog you choose. Guest guest Posted August 13, 2004 Report Share Posted August 13, 2004 Don't take the '20 - times a day' literally. Our dog really only goes out 10 times if that. When she knows people are around our property, she barks to get out. She barks to get out just to soak in the sun or to get a breath of fresh air. She barks to go out for a pee and a poop.
