Guest guest
jay, do a search on "improving soil." there is a lot of information out there. basically, you need to put a LOT of organic matter in, and the soil will then take care of itself. also, look up "raised beds". it might be best considering what you're working with. sal - Jay Ice Tuesday, May 13, 2003 7:47 PM Replenishing soil/yogiiguruji I have heard how depleted the soil is from use of technology and other man-made reasons, Could I grind up multi-vitamins and such into a fine powder and mix in the soil? Any thoughts? Thanks for the poison ivy tid bit. I am sure that will come in handy... there is much ivy to destroy. Jay
Guest guest
Jay, there is a wonderful little magazine by Rodale Press called organic gardening. It is a old favorite among gardeners and will get you in the mood to do it right! Conditioning the soil for good plant growth is a long process...a vitamin pill won't help at all in the long run. What the plant looks for is a combination....air...about 25%, roots breathe too; Water about 25%..we all need it, but too much, too little and the plants will suffer: Soil, 50%...what you should have is a moist but not wet, well aerated composition that provides all the essential nutrients, proper minerals and a sturdy support so the top of the plant so it doesn fall over! Start small so you don't get overwhelmed and give up... a 4x4 raised bed is a good start....the hot weather can make the unending weeding uncomfortable and if your bed is too overwhelming it will not be the pleasant relaxing experience you desire. As the summer progresses, the soil conditioning for a larger garden next year should be your priority. Compost bins, water systems, types of mulch...there are so many things to learn! It becomes a way of life! Keep notes, a journal of your experiences will bring a lot of joy later, as well as a record of what worked for you, and what didn't. dee --- Jay Ice <guessice1010 wrote: > > I have heard how depleted the soil is from use of > technology and other man-made reasons, Could I grind > up multi-vitamins and such into a fine powder and > mix in the soil?
